Hey all - I know this is a little subjective, but I wanted to share with you my loaded/unloaded weights for my various carry pieces. I mainly pocket carry, so I hope this will give you the context between the various pistols I own:
General notes:
I know the details sometimes matter, so here are the gun specific notes:
General thoughts:
For what it is worth, my 2 main carry guns are the 360J and Sig P365. The Ruger LCP is my car gun and/or gets carried when I am not able to carry something else.
At some point, I'd like to do some sort of size comparison. I need to think through the best way to do so. I hope this is helpful and please let me know if I can provide any other details!
General notes:
- The "% Deltas" are compared to the Kahr CM9, which is my "small gun" benchmark. I think most are aware of this gun and generally have an idea of the small size.
- Weights taken from cheap digital scale; YMMV but should be comparative for each handgun
- Unloaded weights taken with empty magazine
- Loaded weights captured with round in chamber (+1) (and loaded round count is reflected in "Rounds" column)
- "Flush fit" mags used unless specified
- No holsters included - see gun specific for grips/mag enhancements
I know the details sometimes matter, so here are the gun specific notes:
- Ruger LCP
- 6+1 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 90 GR
- Smith 360J
- 5 rounds of Federal HST 130 GR 38 Special +P
- Scandium frame with hammer
- Rated for 38 special only
- Hogue Bantom Grip
- Ruger LCR 357
- 5 rounds of Federal HST 130 GR 38 Special +P
- 357 frame is enhanced with steel; heavier than 38 special frame
- Stock LCR grip with finger grooves (not boot grip)
- Keltec PF9
- 8 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 115 GR (flush magazine)
- Has Hogue "HANDALL" Beavertail grip
- Kahr CM9
- 7 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 124 GR
- Glock 43
- 8 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 124 GR
- Has "Magguts" +1 spring kit
- Sig P365
- 11 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 124 GR
General thoughts:
- Smith and Wesson lists their 442 j frame as 14.7 oz. Assuming my scale is remotely accurate, the 442 weight seems a little exaggerated
- Keltec lists their PF9 as 12.7 oz unloaded. It unfortunately isn't as light as I'd hoped
- The Glock 43 is outdated; for 2 extra oz, you get many more rounds in a smaller package
- One could make a similar argument for the Kahr, but I think the Kahr is more useful than the Glock 43
- The LCP is still the king of small/light. Given that they run for ~$220, no one has an excuse for being unarmed anymore
