After alot of shopping around for an old smith I finally picked up a 19-4 produced in 1980. I have a couple questions and would appreciate any help offered. First is there a place where I can read or purchase the original user manual? And second is it normal for the hammer mounted firing pin to have a slight amount of wiggle(up and down only it's tight side to side)? Thanks.

Fantastic choice! I have a 19-5 built in Oct of 1987. Got it off a member here, and got lucky that it came with the matching S/N box and original magna grips that are in pristine condition. I put on some aftermarket Altamont grips with the S&W logo. It's in shooter grade condition, but it's DEFINITELY a shooter! So yours is the last of the pinned barrel/recessed cylinder models. And yes, as others have noted, the hammer-mounted firing pin has just a bit of wiggle to it, it's not supposed to be fixed. Post pics when you can!

BTW, you can post your S/N over on the S&W board http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/ to get a pretty accurate approximation of the build date.

Thanks for the info I called smith with my serial number and they gave me a production year of 1980. Just got back from the range with it and what a shooter it is:) best shooting I've ever done with a revolver compared to my modern Smith's and rugers. I'll try to include a pic but im still figuring the site out. 15514652780836358578850665353255.jpg 15514652780836358578850665353255.jpg

Congrats on the Model 19. I picked up a Model 10 this week and took it to the range this morning for its first outing. I have to agree that these are great shooters.

I know of this Model 19 everyone is talking about!

    Why is everyone else’s black?
Ooh, nice one Brad. BBI got a nickel 19 with the yellow ramp insert off a member here a couple or so years ago. I'm still kicking myself for hemhawing over it before he made a move.

I'm really digging where this thread is going, those are some beautiful samples Mark and Kelly!

A Model 66-1 was my gun that got away many years ago. When I picked up the 19 from an INGOer it ALMOST made up for selling the 66 in 1985.

Oof, I can imagine that's a "fish that got away" you'll remember for too long. I have one of the new 66-8 2.75" models and LOVE it. I've had a 19 or 66 classic snubby on my watch list for a while now. My younger brother's 4" 66 police trade-in started me down this path, I fell in love with that gun between the first and second cylinders the first time I shot it.

Yeah I was a lot younger in 1985 (as was everyone else.) Sold that 66-1 for $300 (paid $275). A snubby 19 or 66 is on my list too. I still can't believe my wife likes the GP100 more than the Model 19.

My favorite Model 19 got away from me. I qualified with and carried it at my first LE job, and it was my backup gun when I was issued the Model 66 (same ammo, same holster, etc, so it rode around in my commission in case anything happened to my primary weapon).

Lost it in a divorce; I was fortunate that another INGO member had as nice a sample for sale when I was looking and had the cash. I was lucky that I was mostly able to get back the one that got away.
