Looks like 1977.
Looks like you have a extra number in there but that is close.

You could always call s&w customer service and they will at least give you the year some reps will go so far as give you month day year it was made as well as the product code.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 4th edition between 1969 when they started the r prefix to maybe mid 1970.

If 18744 is entire number then yes 69 to 70.
