Alright, 1911 officionados, I'm looking at picking one up and want to put my money into something decent. What are your thoughts on the TRP? Non-railed, specifically. I was also looking at the DW Specialist, though I don't particularly want the rail, and also the Colt CCU. I've heard sketchy things about Colt recently, it doesn't breed confidence.

    Thanks, all

Avoid the Colt at that price point. DW and the TRP are good pieces but in reality I would lean towards the DW in this price range. I have been a Springfield guy for years but in the overall fit/finish the DW just might have the edge.
At this price point you really need to shoot both of them if you can get that set up.

While I think Colt is making some of their best guns since the 50's and 60's between the three there really is no comparison, the DW's are better values for the money.

I have been told that Colt is stepping up their game. Not seen it personally as I no longer own any and have no real desire to look.
Some one will put one up for me to check out soon enough.

The last several years in particular they have finally decided to look at consumer demand and finally build guns with the features most 1911 guys want. They are about 20 years too late but they've got some nice guns out right now. They are starting to build more guns as 'series 70' now and I think getting away from the series 80 system or at least building them both ways. The series 70 re-issue I bought as the basis for my retro custom had a decent frame/slide fit and barrel fit but I looked at several before I found one just right. They aren't at the point that i'd order one online without seeing it first though.

I'm a big fan of the DW 1911s. I own several Colts and it was only the USGI one from 1944 that didn't need some work. My latest is an O1992. It's a nice shooter with an EGW custom bushing but the slide to frame fit is the worst I have seen.

None of my DWs have needed anything.

CM I'm surprised you didn't mention Standard Manufacturing. I believe they are in the same price range the OP is working with.

Consider this. Standard Manf. 1911.They currently have 3 models. Blued/high polished nickel and a flame hardened one. I own one in Blue. The finish is just amazing. I also have the High polished one. Both are fit/finish better than any DW I have personally seen and I have seen more than a few. The price point is less for a (IMHO) better gun. If anybody thinks I am wrong bring your DW and e will do a Coon finger comparison.

I am that way with about any off the shelf 1911 I intend to modify. Springers will vary.

I have a DW Specialist and love it. The TRP was #2 on the list and easily could have come home with me. I found the DW I wanted, in the finish I wanted, and that won the day! (I wanted a rail on mine)

The DW Pointman series is awesome as well.

Hey, thanks for all the replies. I checked that Standard Mfg. out, the reviews are great, and I can find the blued model out there for about ~1100, but it's too fine a pistol for the abuse the intended 1911 will take. It also needs more visible sights and a magwell, raising back up to the range of the stainless DW Specialist. Frankly, I'm disappointed DW stopped making the Valor. Should've picked one up when I had the chance.
