Hey everyone. I'm looking into getting a new gun for range/course/home defense. I'm stuck between the two of these firearms. Any information or experiences you can give me will be helpful. Thanks.

I initially got my 17 for the same reasons.

I’m sure you could just as easily use the G34 for those jobs as well.

Although, I think Gaston was thinking more range/competition with the 34

I’d get to the range and try them both

Just something to think about for a defensive handgun. I assume you will put a weapon mounted light on it like a Streamlight TLR-1 or a Surefire X300. Those lights will help the 17 from going out of battery if pressed up against something.

    I have both a 17 and a gen5,mos 34.Either will do the job.
That said, the 34 has a softer trigger than the 17. My 34 is outfitted with a streamlight, laser,a vortex venom, +2 extensions, and suppressor height co-witness night sights.
    It sleeps with me.

I would do the 17 or even a 19 for those purposes. 34 for competitions.

However, I don't own any Glocks but I will stay in a Hampton Inn tomorrow night.

Seriously though, my response is based on my own experiences with trying many guns including the G34.

I went the M&P way but tit for tat the 17 is like the full size and the 19 is like the 2.0 Compact. I have owned both. I got the Compact so it could be my do it all gun. Carry, home defense, training and range work.

If I ever decide to shoot a competition, I'm fine with my Compact. If I got really good and was finishing just short of number one at competitions, I'd consider a larger pistol.

I have a gen 4 17 and a gen 5 34 . The 17 has aneriglow sights and the 34 Dawson precision. While both are great I actually thing the 17 is better. To the point I'd get a gen 5 17 if I had it to do over.

I use to run a 35 I USPSA (when I was still just 2 divisions( and the 35 was great. The 34 is a good fun too ut it doesn't do anything the 17 cant
