So I'm new to guns..bear with me. Acquired two firearms after a death in the family (not recent). This was in an old box we went through. There was also a .38 special and old ammo.

I tried to capture any markings. It's pretty worn.

Can you help me identify this? Is it worth refurbing? Should I have a smith go through it?

    Thank you.

A CAI import, if it's a steel frame then it's a P38, an aluminum frame would be a P1 typically with a hex shaped cross-pin but yours definitely looks like a steel frame. You should be able to get a date of mfg from the SN pretty easily.

The “359” Waffenamp means that it was manufactured by Mauser, and it will have a “byf”manufacture code on it. There is no such thing as a P1 with nazi markings, so it is definitely a P38 with a steel frame. The import stamps on the barrel indicate that it was imported into the US after 1968. The overall condition, and the import marks, preclude any real collectors value, but it will be a GREAT SHOOTER.

I was thinking of shooting it at some point. Thanks for the info.

The P38 is a super fun shooter. It is one of the first, if not the first, pistols with a decocker. Be careful dropping the slide on an empty chamber. I had the slide crack at the front left corner of my P38 when I did this ... talk about a sickening sound.
