Mag Tactical Gen 4 ultra light lower review. MAG Tactical Systems | Weapons Platforms & Sound Suppression Manufacturer
I picked this new lower up at the height of the buying frenzy, through a group buy a group of friends and I set up. I could not find much real info on the lower at the time other than a few press releases and advertising pages. Mag Tactical Systems is within a ½ hour of my house and I know a couple of the guys that work there and in the supporting businesses. So I really had high hopes for their product.

They advertise the Gen 4 lower to be 33% lighter than a mil spec lower receiver. I weighed the Gen 4 after getting it and it weighed 5.9 ounces the CMMG lower that I compared it to was 9.1 ounces. So their claims are true about the lighter weight, go figure. Now will the average guy realize the lower weight? I have to say that yes I liked the lowered weight and it changed the balance of my rifle. The weight reduction is in the center part of the rifle of course. But is it something that will make us a better shooter or fighter? Probably not but a little less weight is a good thing as long as we do not give up any strength. How much stress is on a lower receiver? I do not know, I have seen pictures of them made from wood and all kinds of polymers. I guess long term will tell us in the end.

The lower comes in a box and that is a good thing. But my problem with the one I bought and the other 4 that I built is that the receiver is painted and not anodized. It is a Duracoat finish which really doesn’t bother me, but they could be a little bit clearer in the advertising. There were issues with the paint application quality too. The lower comes with an integrated “winter” type trigger guard, which is a nice feature that has to add to the strength of the receiver. They also come with longer trigger pins because the Mag Tactical lower has raised dimples to strengthen the trigger pin holes. Looks different, some people like it some don’t , me I don’t care. One thing to note is that if you plan on running the KNS trigger pin stabilizer kits I do not think that will work due to the longer length. I built the receiver with a PSA Magpul MOE lower parts kit and everything went together very easily and lined up as it should. I am a mil spec type trigger guy and the trigger on the Mag Tactical gen 4 lower and the PAS parts kit was amazingly smooth. Even better than some aftermarket triggers I have played with, a light 5lb pull no grit and a clean break. The others I built with DPMS and CMMG parts kits and they were the run of the mill, mil spec trigger creepy, gritty 7-8 lb pull. They were very serviceable and more like what I am used to.
I have been running the lower for 6 weeks now and don’t have a lot of rounds through it but it is a AR lower receiver. When you are running it it just feels like any other with the exception of being 3 ounces lighter in the center pivot point of the rifle. Both P-mags and GI magazines lock up and drop free, upper to lower fit is very good with 3 different uppers I have tried on mine, no wobble but the pins come out fairly easy. No pin walk and a decent trigger, durability seems to be ok.

Now my only problem that I had with my lower, the finish was terrible! It had a bubble in the paint that I noticed when I first opened it up. When I was putting it together the bubble of course popped leaving a bare spot on the lower. Also every one of the 4 I handled had a spot on the bottom of the mag well that did not have any paint on them. This is a serious flaw in quality control in my opinion. While I am a form over function type guy and do not mind my guns getting scratched and beat up a little. I want to do the scratching and beating. This was during the buying frenzy and I know they like everyone else was swamped, but quality control is a major problem if you slack off on it. But it does not affect the operation of the tool, just inspect before buying if you have the chance.
The lower nice integrated trigger guard plus a dent logo unlike some of the others out there.
