A 76-year-old Massachusetts man is facing charges after defending himself from a bear attack. The man liked to spread birdseed for the birds to eat in his backyard. After feeling threatened by previous sightings of this bear near his property, the man kept a shotgun with him as he tended his wooded property. On the day of the incident, the bear charged at him while he was outside and he was forced to shoot it dead.

But defending yourself isn't acceptable in Massachusetts. Police are charging the man for baiting the bear with birdseed, keeping & bearing arms without a state permission slip, and failing to keep the firearm locked up inside as he was being attacked. "Environmental Police" say that he should have made a phone call instead of defending himself.

The neighbor, who intentionally attracts the bear by hanging donuts on the tree limbs, called the police to report his neighbor. He dismisses the idea that the bear could have possibly been charged the man, since, "it never bothered us before."

    I call BS.

If the neighbor hangs doughnuts on tree branches he wouldn't have to call the police, he'd just have to walk out back and talk to them. It is highly likely the doughnut eaters (police) would have heard the man shoot the bear, unless the hanging donuts were apple fritters or blueberry in which case the police officers eating them off of the tree branches would be so distracted as to not notice.

Hanging doughnuts to attract a bear?

I had to re-read the article. I thought he had shot a cop.

Must have extra Fluoride in their water up that way....

Was the neighbor wearing a police uniform? Maybe the bear was just trying to beat them to the doughnuts for once?

I've never seen a cop fight a bear over a glazed yeast but I'm betting it'd be epic. I don't claim to be able to whoop a bear's ass but he'd be enjoying that doughnut with a black(er) eye and a knot on his head.

its a F*%KING BEAR. you don't ask a bear if he has a license for his deadly weapons, or call the police if you're threatened. 10 rounds from a 9mm wouldn't have given a bear anything but a bad attitude.

never mind tyranny, we now have BEARS as a legitimate reason to be able to defend ourselves.

Depending where he shot it, maybe not so much.

Why do they always seem to find the dumbest person around to give a comment on things? Who purposely ATTRACTS a bear, like seriously. Didn't people learn anything from Lake Placid?

The real tragedy here is that a bear was visiting the area because people had set up a KrispyKreme drive through for him. Poor bear saw the HOT donuts sign flashing and came running.

The a**hat putting the donuts out should be the one charged in this. Those type of people are a major contributing factor to interactions like this.
