UCSD Lecturer Releases Geotagging Application For "Dangerous Guns and Owners" - Slashdot

And you thought the New York newspaper culling gun license holders' addresses from public records searches and publishing them was a bad idea. A University of California - San Diego lecturer (how that fully differs from professor, I don't know) Brett Stallman has released "Gun Geo Marker", to allow people to post the lat & long of places where they witness unsafe gun handling or gun possession by "dangerous" people to a publicly accessible database. Yeah. This wont end badly at all.

Lecturer - likely part-time, and certainly not tenured.

Can we tag Biden? How about pretty much every single police department? Every other government office? This could be fun.

Side note: other than some real "winners", the conversation on /. seems to lean pretty hard towards liberty. I like it.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a completely general geoloc tagging app. Install a dB on your own Internet server, enter that URL into the app, along with all of your geocaching buddies, and whenever one person tags a place, only the people in your geocaching circle can see them. Then, everyone in your liberty-minded circles of friends could share just that info, where are all of the government guns, and the government wouldn't be able to see that info sharing.

Easiest way to defeat this is to dig up his address and "tag" every one of his neighbors for a 10 block radius :whip:

Outside this being a targeting device for the criminal element. Could this not become the new way for operations of public policing? Once this information is posted on a public forum or other manner then the police could use this as an investigative tool right?

I might download this app... and start tagging random places around indy like restaurants and tanning salons and car dealerships.
Tag anti-gun places so gun owners and ain't-gunners alike won't go there.

and someone tell me how this isn't a breech of privacy. I know some people in California don't believe in privacy (I.e. the socialists) but I personally appreciate mine.

There is an app for that. Its called gunsafe or something like that. The only problem with the app is that its new and relies on people to update it and no one has really put anything into it yet.

He says he isn't concerned about the death threats he claims to have received. But aren't these dangerous people that need to be tracked on a phone app for the safety of society?? Which is it?

People who are responsible owners and pose no threat and are being stalked and tracked by the public is a crime in itself. So what crime is it they're punishing for?
