I got a pistol caliber carbine to take with us when we travel and 80% of our out-of-state travels are to Michigan, sometimes through and/or stopping in Ohio.

As best I can tell the firearm is good to go at all of our usual destinations, as long as it is transported unloaded and cased in the trunk... my remaining question is...

When it comes to transporting a long gun, in Michigan and Ohio, from one piece of private property to another or to/from a hotel, including stops where the rifle remains in the vehicle... and not on DNR controlled lands... can I have the unloaded rifle cased in my trunk and a LOADED mag elsewhere in the vehicle?

(Michigan gun law sites seem to quote DNR regs as applying to the entirety of the state.)
