News Flash! This just in. Money and the internet can be used to purchase materials for murders and terrorists.

Clearly we need to ban all credit purchases and allow only cash and barter. Want a new house? That will be 40,000 goats, 200 chickens and a cow.

    A quote from the article.
"The implication of expecting the government to detect and prevent every mass shooting is believing the government should play an enormously intrusive role in American life,” Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst at the A.C.L.U. Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, wrote in July.

Well crap, now the ACLU is the voice of common sense.

    Sometimes they are. Rarely.

No space for comments, that I could see. There are probably 100,000 gun purchases with a credit cards a year, a lot more than that on ammo.

Some people buy multiple firearms at a time and even a couple of times a month. These folk have never been involved in a felony, and most likely never will.

"James Holmes used credit to help buy more than $11,000 in guns, grenades, gas mask and other military gear to attack a movie theater "

Can I order grenades on the net or do I need to go to the grenade store and pick them up in person?

I'm glad none of us have bought or have "thousands of rounds of ammunition" on hand.

Depends. Which drawer of the file cabinet are we talking about? Because some only have a few hundred. Unless you mean "BOOLET" bullets. In which case it's pretty much all of them...

They often are, in matters NOT involving 2A. Since this has much wider implications than just gun purchases, they have likely chosen to "err" on the side of liberty.

That said, the real desire is likely revealed by the following passage:

    Andrew Ross Sorkin said:
Several payment systems — including PayPal, Square and Apple Pay — already had established rules that ban the sale of guns and gun-related items using their systems.

But no bank has instituted a ban or committed to tracking gun purchases.

I appreciate the stance of VISA and MasterCard on this as well. Of course this flies in the face of the "if we can't legislate it, just drive them out of business" crowd.

Did you guys miss the gist of the article? They want the credit card companies to control the purchase of guns. This is after all the new way to push the progressive agenda. If you can't use the government to make things the way you want them, use corporations that play a large part in people's everyday lives.

I don't think I missed it. With the current interest rates a peanut butter jar buried in the yard looks better and better. Since most "money" exists only in the electronic form, if everyone demands cash and the government has to pony up, we have the makings of all the problems created when we changed from gold to paper. Runs on banks, cash shortages, a whole other generation of distrust for financial institutions, revenue loss from decreased credit card interest and on and on.

If the people who actually have money stop using cards and the only ones who are left are the ones trying to "borrow themselves rich" the market will have to change. The system is set up currently like a credit card is a status symbol, what happens when it makes you a an outcast?

Cash and barter are both fear factors to the government and financial institutions, it loosens their grip and undermines their control. Why not use them?

Even if it stops one "mass murder", what about the thousands killed in gang-related murders? Think the gang-bangers and criminals are running up their credit cards on the black market? Once again criminalizing the non-criminals leaving the real problems completely untouched.
