Therefore, in accordance with the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, we hereby request the U.S. Department of Transportation please issue a preemption order nullifying any and all state and local laws that restrict truck drivers from carrying firearms across state lines throughout America in order to enable them to protect themselves and their cargo as they engage in interstate commerce.
As this is now a matter of life and death, please issue same forthwith.

The sticking point is that they are asking appointed bureaucrats not elected officials.

I am agains giving power to bureaucracies.

This! Not many, including present company, take too kindly to bureaucrats trying to over-ride existing law. We get pretty wrapped around the axle when they propose nullifying a law we like.

Is this actually some kind of law though or just a regulation enacted by bureaucrats? If it was a law what was the impetus/reasoning behind it?

As you all well know, gun laws suck in a lot of places. You could be arrested in some areas just for having an unloaded 15 round handgun magazine. You might be able to tote a shotgun but in some areas it has to be unloaded and locked up, aka, useless.

We have worthless politicians but the problem is the folks who vote for them. If they want to make themselves helpless that's up to them but they want to make everyone else helpless too, then demand that others take risks while forcibly unarmed, so they can hole up at home and have food and supplies delivered to their door during a pandemic.

It is State laws and in States that that don't have preemption, local laws.

So what some want is for the Federal Government to declare itself Soverign over the States.

That is not a slippery slope.

I didn't find any specific Federal law or DOT regulation so are you saying there are States that specifically forbid commercial drivers to carry guns regardless of carry/permits etc?

I don't get what you are asking. The article you linked clearly shows it is local laws that impede carry.
