Something in a 12ga. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 are fine choices for a budget home defense shotgun.
I have a Mossberg with a 20" barrel that I like real well. There are many configurations of both of these guns and many aftermarket items to customize them to your liking.

considering I deal with the 870 everyday I work perimeter, I personally hate it. I'd recommend a breakdown or some other 12ga. Myself personally, If need ever arises, I'm reaching for my winchester 97....you know it is going to work and you can trust it. My trust will never go to an 870.

that said, everyone else will bash me for my dislike of the 870, I grew up with the 97, and the 870 just doesn't fill the place and the build quality isn't there

I'd find a used Remmy 1100 or 11-87 in 12 ga with a 21"-24" bbl. Add a Nordic Components +4 or +5 mag tube and test for function with 00 buck. Then load it up and put it in the corner (or somewhere completely out of reach of the little ones or the unknowing).

If $$$ were not an issue, I'd say that you find an older Benelli M1 Super 90 (like the HK imports) and do the same thing. That's my choice.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the NEF pardner pump in 12 gauge. $150-$160 NIB. For a home defense gun, you can't do much better for your money. If I am correct, they are a copy of the 870. Good guns IMHO.

They are in the the mid 60th, both of the 870 and the 590 are pretty nice and i like the 870. But which one would be better for them, not to complex and less recoil, and how the price compared between those two?

Maybe they should have a nice AR15 in 5.56 for home defense. There is little or no recoil and many more rounds available to fight off an intruder.

Frankly..... (IMHO) unless you're going to shoot the crap out of it, I see nothing wrong with a Mossberg 500. Ive got one with a folding stock, side saddle shell carrier, and a cool looking heat shield. I feel well armed!!! :yesway:

If you want a good deal on shotguns you should visit my dealer, he normally has a couple mossbergs and remingtons in stock...(Jerry's Gun Shop)

I just picked up an 11/87 police model

I would suggest a coach gun. Simple, no action to work, and you simply have to pull a trigger. Unless someone is comfortable with a pump shotgun, I wouldn't recommend it for a high stress situation when the SHTF...

Where can i get a good deal for one of those. I tried to search google but the price a little bit high.

Mossberg 50521 500SP 12 18 6SH CB PGK PRK for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $257.00
Mossberg 50411 500SP 12 18 CB 6SH SYN PGK for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $295.00
Mossberg 50577 500SP 12 20 CB 8SH SYN for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $286.00

Anyone of these would be good. If your price range is less than this check used guns in pawn and gun shops. I'm not sure what kind of used prices Gander Mtn has but they always have used shotguns.

    Where's the bacon?

Something else to consider is that while they could probably handle the recoil of a 12g now, this may change in the next 10-20 years (and hopefully, they'll be around longer than that!) As such, how about a Remington 870 in 20g?
