So I was on the old world wide web looking for guns to buy

and I came across a good deal on a ole mossberg 500.I met

the guy with gun the gun and he was asking 125 so I took

the gun home for a hundred dollar bill.I got the shotgun

back to my house and found that it was a lil rough to say

the least. The finish was worn off on various parts of the

gun,the mag tube was rusted and last but not least it had

gigantic scope mounts jb welded to the tapped part of the

    reciever.
So first off I just wanted to make this a cheapo HD shotgun.I

tackled the big part of the work first by gettin the damn

scope mounts off.At first I tried to grind off the mounts with

a knockoff dremel tool.It took forever and still wasn't

working. So finally one night I looked at my trusty hammer

and gave three wacks and both of them suckers flew off.

Next I basically took my dremel and sanded/ground my

recievers scratches and any other inconsistantcies in the

finish.I needed to cut the 28" vent rib barrel so it would be

good to protect my house.I got out the measuring tape and

made my mark at 18.5" and got to cutting.I used a standard

hacksaw and made rounded cuts on the barrel. It sounds

intimidating but it was easy to get a nice looking cut. After

that I took my rotary tool and ground down the cut so it was

nice and smooth. Finally the gun was disassembled and

sanded down, taped up and ready for paint.

I wanted to keep this deal as cheap as possible so instead of

a $30 duracote kit I opted for rustolem high heat engine

enamle in flat black($5.50).I simply hung the reciever/barrel

in my basement on a coat hanger and got down to

business.I did about 4 coats waiting 15 minutes between

each coat.So in a nutshell it took me an hour to refinish the

500.The gun was dry to the touch in an hour and was

reassembled the next day and ready for action.

So with all that being said I think i did a real good job on

this lil project.I am really proud of this gun and had a lot of

fun fixin it up.The whole revamp was done with a $12

dremel knockoff from harbor freight tools,a hacksaw and a

can of fancy spraypaint. The gun came out with a nice

smooth matte black finish and is ready to deliver 9 .25

caliber pellets in one shot to any unwelcome houseguests!
I am now constantly searching for other guns to refinish

because I know what I can do.

Turned out very nice! Only thing I'd have done different was knock off that bit of vent rib that is haning out in the open, just waiting to snag on something in the middle of the night.

Just an FYI...that high-heat paint is NOT compatible with Hoppes #9. I did something similar on an SKS a few years back, and the first time I cleaned it the finish started coming off.

Looks good man, spend another $6 bucks and get some spray on clear coat to help protect the paint. Are you planning on refinishing the foward part of the magazine tube?

Nice work, and on a budget! :ar15:

My 'deal' was on a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag®. It was sitting at Whittaker's with a 20" Slugster® barrel and a unique, bubbified finish.
Talk about a deal at the right price, ugly outside, and purdy inside the barrel & internals.

After getting it home, and cleaning the outside parts without disassembly, I used turtle car wax to further waterproof the finish that bubba had created...

    It's my Indiana deer gun!

Just for your information I saw a mossy500 at Wally World here in Rochester for $217. They just started selling long guns here again and I thought that was a pretty good deal.:)
