I'm trying to decide b/w two rifles

One is a mint Remington 700 in 30-06 for $420

The other is a Savage 110E in .308 with a scope for $325 (how does this model compare to the 110FP?)

    What do you guys think?

tough pick. does the savage have an accutrigger? Is there a weight difference? Is one cartridge cheaper or fit your needs better?
    just some thoughts.

    No accu trigger

Weight difference - not sure the Remington wasn't heavy and haven't held the savage.

.308 that I have seen is generally cheaper by a couple bucks/20rds

Either will provide a punch downrange

What are you looking to do with it? Just a shooter? Long range paper punching?

The Savage 110e is an economy model produced it the 70's and 80's as 7.62 was not part of the original chamberings offered when the rifle first came to market.

The Savage 110FP will be a heavy barreled glass bedded rifle. With or without the accutrigger they are very accurate rifles out of the box.

As for the remmy 700 which model is it?

You could shoot .30-06 M2 ball in the Remington though. From CMP it's only around .30 cents a round. I don't know anything about the individual rifles, but caliber wise I'd pick 30-06 anyday.

Both rifles are good shoters. My question is intent. If you just want a rifle to plink occasionally with an d go hunting, where a rifle is allowed, go with the savage, you won't regret it. However if this a rifle you may or plan to accurize or up grade go with the remington. Upgrading a remington is much easier as there are lots more options. And with the volume of remintion accesories out ther getting things secondhand and thus cheaper, will be much easier to do with the remington thatn the savage.

If it is an older Remington 700 I would definitely go for that. Remington's quality has been supposedly slipping recently from what I've heard, but my experiences don't reflect that.

30.06 has more top end, the 308 will do most of what a 30.06 will do. So if you don't need the little extra the 30.06 gives you a 308 is a fun round to shoot.

Let's face it, you really need both :-)

My experience is that the Remington is a better quality rifle (I know your mileage may vary). And there is just part of me that feels every American needs a 30-06... maybe its the Springfield 1903/MI Garand thing...

Don't need the savage, I looked up that particular model and it's a no go, something about the action wasn't right -

Already picked up the 700, but I'm still not sure if I "need" this as my HK bug has bitten me pretty bad.

well until I just read your last post I was gonna say go with the savage 110 270 sitting on my floor that im trying to make it to 10 posts so I can post it :):. I have only put about 20 shells through it, never even touched the scope and I love how light weight it seems to be. But anyways good luck with your 700 im sure its also a great gun.
