I stopped in an LGS yesterday and came across a like new Ruger Gunsite Scout in 5.56, Bonus was it was a left hand action which is how I roll long guns. Looked new and was priced just over $700 or about $150 less than the shop had new ones. I have read a lot about the .308 models but not the 5.56. Down side is the cost of extra mags which are stupid pricey.

Anyone have experience shooting these? Curious about accuracy with different weights of bullets and overall quality.

I shudder to think would grab a mossberg mvp solely for the standard ar15 mag use. With ar prices right now does the gun site scout do much a carbine doesn't? Not trying to talk you out of it, curious really. :)

I would go for the 308 version instead. If you want a 5.56 bolt gun on a budget, get an MVP. Takes your AR mags and is reasonably accurate.

Those are nice rifles, but I would probably go for a .308 in that model. On the other as mentioned above that Mossberg MVP is something to look at for sure.

Resurrecting this thread. I now have found a LH Ruger Scout in .308. Decent price with extras. I don't need this, I have a CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 and a 30-30. Both are less powerful I know but they cover the moderate range/power slot. Thoughts on the 308 Scout?

Secondary resurection. ANOTHER LH .308 Scout has popped up. Opinions still running positive? This would likely see only range time but short LOP combined with LH action and a Leupold 1.5-4x scout scope puts it right up my alley and into my wheelhouse.

I have never fired one but I really would love to have the 308 LH version.

Haven't seen too many of these locally used for sale. Is $700 with the Leupold scope a good price? Is the Ruger Scout fun to shoot or does the lighter weight amp up the recoil?

I’ve shot one in 308 quite a bit and found the recoil to be very mild. It has a large soft recoil pad that is likely the reason.

I have had the 308 model with the wood stock and have had it for a couple of years and absolutely love it. Recoil isn’t bad at all. I am running the fixed power intermediate 2.5 leupold scout scope on the front pic rail. Really quick target acquisition with that. With the irons it’s fairly accurate out of the box as well. Mags weren’t all that bad for the polymer 10 rounders in the $25-$30 range. In my opinion I would go 308.

700.00 is a good price will only go up from there. Yes recoil is a little more with 308 but it's a 308. I have two 308's I shoot love to shoot but next day a little sore but what the heck still worth it. Buy it and have fun. Before it is sold or traded.
