"Elk or reindeer skin sleeping bags" I'll be a little more thankful and appreciative next time I use my light weight modern sleeping bag.

"rubber sandals" "used in arctic expedition " "for use in cold weather"... Sandals? Have they re-defined what a sandal is in the last 50 years or am I missing something?

Oh they were not as Crazy as it sounds..

From the Report from the Board of Officers for the Greeley Exposition, discussing the equipment they should bring...

"A Pair of Rubber Sandals with toe and heel guards and a strap across the instep will save the soles of moccasins in summer travel. The Sandals should have a large rubber Mesh or rough surface much in the manner of a rubber door mat"

But much of this equipment wish list was being thought up from people that never really went to the Arctic before and much modern experimentation was in play. The Pioneers get all the arrows.

Fascinating. Makes you wonder what happened to lots of old stuff.

Bannerman Castle had an explosion and fire in 1920. The ferry boat sunk in 1950 and the island and castle (and guns) abandoned. The State of New York bought the island in 1967 and removed the remaining guns then. There was a second fire in 1969.

Bannerman Island/Castle is a repeating fixture in the gun rags. If you want to know more, I am certain you can find all kinds of articles by asking Mr. Google or the archives of gun rags.

The nice thing of Bannerman Island is that its more then just a touchstone for the modern era of surplus arms collecting. It becomes a stage for the arts, all the while maintaining its historical roots.. Godspell took on a whole new feel with the Bannerman castle in the background..
