I've owned several lever actions through the years including a Marlin 1894 44 mag. , Marlin 1895 444 and Model 39 22lr. I traded the big bore levers many years ago but still have the 22s. Then last summer I was able to find a good deal on a Marlin 1894 in 357 and then not long ago I picked up a Henry Big Boy Silver also in 357. I will probably add a 44 again some day!

I have a Marlin 1894 in .357mag and I am planning to start hog hunting with it.

    attachment.php

Opinion is divided on whether it is sufficient for hog hunting, so I am looking for a JM-stamped 336 in .30-30 to add as a second option in case the .357mag is inadequate or if the dreaded Marlin jam shows up at the wrong time.

Hard to find a better way to spend an afternoon than shooting lever action.

MY next long gun purchase will be a lever gun in either 357 (which I currently load for), or 44 mag (which I don't currently own/shoot).
I think the Truth About Guns (TTAG) website did some comparisons between 30-30 and 357 Mag in lever guns. Long story short, the 357 gets a big boost in a long barrel, but at best it comes to meet minimal 30-30 numbers.

    ... now 45-70, that's a different story

    Yes, I have a few.

For me, most use has been in carbine classes where I sent to gun school with friends from NYC and Chicago who could not easily own handguns or AR-15s, thus they used Marlin lever actions in .357. I did as well to fit in.

Spencer rifle, original, #4177, converted to center fire. I have shot hundreds of blanks (converted 32 gauge shotgun shells) through it, but never had the nerve to shoot the live rounds I made (cut-down 50-70 Gov cases, .52 cast lead bullet over black powder). May try it someday when the right setup presents itself and I have thoroughly scrubbed out the barrel. Not in a hurry.

Have shot live rounds through the Sharps rifle, and though it is lever action, it is single shot.

Winchester 30/30 pre-64. I hunted with it this year. Also have a Henry 22 that I got in a trade, absolutely love it. Will be purchasing a Henry in .357 at some point.

Had to count didn't realize I was up to 5, 3 22s, 357 and 30-30. Henry in brass or case harden but can't justify cost now.

You can't beat a lever action, us cowboys shoot them all the time. Marlin 39, Marlin 1894 in 45 LC, Marlin 1895 in 45/70, Uberti 1873 in 357.

What CURRENT production guns use a loading port (as opposed to removing mag tube from muzzle end)??

Edit to add... in 357 or 44 mag (not 30-30)

I have a couple, but don't shoot them as much as I'd like. I do think it's still a good design, even in today's world.

My .44 mag M92 started life as a 24" rifle, but I had AllanM cut it down to 17". Now I have a short handy carbine, but with the heavy octagon barrel that only comes in the longer rifle.

My Marlin 30-30 wears a leftover Aimpoint Comp M4 for now. Looks goofy, but works well.

7, but it will be 8 as soon as Henry ships my new Big Boy steel in .327fed/mag.
    Currently in the stable are,
    Henry .22lr
    Henry Frontier .22wmr
Stevens (Ted Williams) single-shot lever action .22lr
    Rossi 92 .357mag
    Marlin (JM stamped) .44mag
    Puma .454 Casull
    Mossberg 464 .30-30 Winchester

I've taken deer with a single shot with the .44, the .454, and this past season with the .30-30.
    Haven't tried the .357 yet.

I'm expecting (hoping) my FFL to call any day now to tell me my Big Boy is here.
    I can't wait.
Technically, I guess I already have 8. I forgot about an 1885 "Low Wall" in .22lr.
It's a single-shot, falling block, but it has a lever.

Yes, I guess you could say I like some lever-action action.

A few, had a browning BL-17 that was my go to squirrel gun but it became a safe queen so I sold it. Had a armi sport spencer in 45 schofield, sold it because while it was a good range gun it never ran right in competition. A winchester 94 trails end in 357mag was what I used to hunt deer in IN until last year when they allowed rifles again. I currently shoot a 1887 12ga, 1873 in 45 colt and one in 357mag, and a 1866 in 45 colt in SASS comps. A sharps in 45-70 or 45-120 is on my short list for the future.

    I've got a couple Marlins.. I've got a 39 22 that I've had for a long time, and I've got a stainless 45-70 I really like. I'd like to eventually pick up a 357 too.

Not me personally but my Dad has a Henry Big Boy in .357. I've shot it a couple times and that thing is sweet.
