I became a member of a local conservation club last year and have access to a 50, 100, and 200 yard rifle range. I am looking to buy a bolt action 223 to make use of them with something other than my old trusty 10/22 or AR. I'm not skilled or wealthy enough to justify a high end firearm but don't want to throw good money after bad and just go buy the cheapest thing I can find. A savage model 10 or 11 is what I am leaning towards. Are there any experienced rifleman on here that can stear me in the right direction to buy one that I will be happy with without breaking my bank?

Savage Axis II with the accutrigger would be a great one. I also highly reccomend the Howa Mini Action in 223. The trigger and accuracy out of box was way beyond expectation.

I came back to add the Howa 1500 Sporter. Uses Weatherby actions and triggers. VERY nice rifles.

Check out the Ruger American Ranch for a short rifle or the Predator for longer.

Thanks, I will. I'm kinda partial to Ruger brand just because I had a 10/22 as a kid ( still do ) and my dad had a 22 revolver that I had a blast with growing up. Well made reasonable priced manufacturer and of course made in America. I had heard that Savage was hard to beat for accuracy and reliability was the only reason I didn't give more thought to the American.

The Mossberg MVP is hard to beat for the money. Chambered in 5.56 and feeds from AR mags.

I am really impressed with the Remington 783 I bought this past year in .243. With a rebate and on sale, I paid $240 with a cheap scope included. It shoots less than an inch at 100 yds.

I have several bolt action 223's including a Stevens model 200 that has killed piles of groundhogs. The Savage is also a great rifle.

My first interest was the MVP because I liked the idea of using AR mags but had read that they had feeding issues

It is not smooth feeding like a $3000 dollar Remington 700 in an AI chassis. You have to wiggle the bolt a little to get it to feed, but you save $2500 dollars. What will you pay for a little wiggle?

I would look into a Savage or Ruger. Both make great rifles.

    I got a Savage Axis in 30-06 for a gift, it's sweet.

Right now, you can buy well-built Mauser rifles for next to nothing. Thousands upon thousands were converted to sporters, and nobody wants them anymore.

Seriously, you can get a gun that's had $1000+ worth of work for something between $200 and $300.
