2. It's been around for over 30 years since the South Africans made a slide action version of the R4.

And a barley over 16" barrel for US markets may pose an issue for ATF if it was a shotgun.

At the end of the article they cite a reference - "Task & Purpose".

Heading over there yields this: Kalashnikov Just Dropped a Badass New Pump-Action Rifle. Which has "shotgun" in the URL, but the article always calls it a "rifle".
