I am a consolidator of calibers. I have it down to .22LR, 9mm, .45ACP, .223/5.56, 7.62x39 and 300BLK. It will take a special need to get me into another caliber.

That being said, I have been teetering on the idea of getting a .308. There are some great deals on .308 rifles and some AR-10s out there now. So the question comes down to NEED.

So...in Indiana, with our topography, does someone really NEED a .308 rifle?

I was going to say deer (or maybe even hogs, if the trend continues), but you've got the 7.62.

MAYBE, if you're trying to rationalize, the .308 is better at longer distances, which you MIGHT have the opportunity/need for. Also, if you go west for hunting, the .308 will be a more versatile round.

Or (and this always works), you know you're going to get rid of one of the other calibers, but you want to give the .308 a try, first, and then decide. :)

    You're welcome.

By the end of this thread, ACC will have new shotgun, a new .308, a new knife, a new truck, and maybe even a new dog. :)

Since when does NEEDing a different caliber come into play? I love a good long distance rifle. I have an AR10-4 Armalite and it's one of my favorite rifles. I love a .243 and I don't know of anything in IN that it can't kill dead in it's tracks. Bears are making a comeback. What do we have now..TWO? Blacks aren't that hard to kill considering their size here. Hogs? Hardly.
You have the basic calibers covered including .30 cal.
Are your shooting skills enough to justify the same caliber at longer range?
The .308/7.62x51 is excellent at short range as well.
    Different thoughts for you.

    .
    I'd reduce one of the 30's if I bought a .308.

And you're not much of a consolidator if you have a 300 AAC. ;) It's popular, but it's still nichy as sh@#.

    Could be anywhere
    I would say yes...but then I have 3 in 7.62 NATO.

I also have a .30-06 so do I need a 300 Win Mag? Why do I keep looking at them? :dunno: Why ask why? I think the answer is just buy more ammo...

    I have a .223/556, and a .308/7.62, I don't need a 7.62x39 .....

JMHO, these two, do all I need done .....

If I can't do it, then it will not get done .....

Some enterprising INGO photoshopper should create a firearm version of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

(These are just spitballing ideas, someone more creative and knowledgable about calibers could probably do better.)
    Bottom row: target shooting - .22 LR, 9mm, .38/.380, 410 shotgun
Second row: small game - 20 gauge shotgun, .17 HMR, .22 WMR, 223/5.56
    Third row: self defense - 9mm, 10mm, 12 gauge, 7.62x39
    Fourth row: nirvana - .45, .308, 2 bore

Yeah yeah yeah, I'm sure this'll trigger some caliber-type people. :)

I broke down and bought one just because... I feel so much better knowing I have it.... really, I do...

If I went with what I need, I would have about 30 less guns. I can't see getting rid of more than about 1 right now. I got that crazy need thing in my head and just talked myself out of a 300 blackout, a 6.5 Grendel and a .357 levergun....for now. I was counting and realized I have 14 firearms I can legally take deer with. Do I really need 14? No. But I'm keeping them anyway. Keep in mind, it is really hard to sell stuff right now, because there are so many great deals out there.
