    223 will chamber in a 204

    300blk in a 5.56

I've heard a person claim they shot .357 in their .35 Rem

Depending on the gun/chamber, a 9mm will fit in a 9mm Mak (guns usually can't take the pressure)

    Etc., etc.

Just cause it fits doesn't mean it's safe. That statement can be very very dangerous. But generally if it fits, extractor supports it well enough, firing pin is strong enough and the case doesn't move....it can fire even though it's not safe

We had a case where a man had an OLD off brand 45 Colt revolver and was shooting .44 Magnum in it. ( the accuracy had to have been amazing ) The cylinder let go and badly cut a boy next to him.

I have personally seen a 9mm cartridge feed from a magazine into a .40 cal, fire, and hit the target. Obviously not good and a lot of circumstances can be downright dangerous! The 9mm casing expanded inside the .40 cal chamber to the size of a .40 for just that part of the cartridge!!

    Could be anywhere
If it fits, it may fire...the consequences of it doing so are in question.

See the Carcano 6.5 vs 7.3 issue. Both rounds would fit and fire. One combination created a rattle and went out to somewhere in the direction the rifle pointed the other would just create a blocked barrel...if the shooter was lucky.

I once had a guy at the Indy 1500 show stop buy are table looking for 7.62x25 Tok too shoot in his broomhandle Mauser pistol! A pistol that was designed too shot the 7.63x25 Mauser round. The two rounds are interchangeable between each other. You can shoot the 7.63x25 in a pistol or sub-gun that shoots the 7.62x25. Because its a lighter charged round. But you can't shoot that Tokarev in the Broomhandle much hotter and will blow the pistol up.

I've seen it happen. Guy (acquaintance) thought his 204 reloads were just hot and case ruptures were normal. He didn't stop until he had a case neck separation and couldn't chamber a new round

204 Ruger is a longer case and longer OAL

223 bullet might be bigger but the length is shorter

Kinda 300blk in 556 kinda thing

Might not work in ALL 204s and won't mean the bolt just closes easily. But it's possible

I have picked up 10-15 brass from our range that looks exactly like that's what happened. Still have them in a nice stack on my desk. Funny how the base fits clean into the throat...kind of like brass Legos...LOL
