So, my lovely fiancée decided she was in the mood for a movie and bought us tickets to go see Wind River. I have to say, the movie was actually pretty great (though a bit sad), with a pretty exciting ending. I would describe the movie a modern western, more than the police thriller set in the woods that it looked like from the preview.

Anyway, Jeremy Renner's character carried a Marlin M1895SBL toward the latter half of the movie and used it with good, if somewhat exaggerated effect (I won't say more due to spoilers). That led me to looking at Marlin's website for the gun and I noticed the game suggestions for it (look at the bottom of the screenshot). I'd say the movie gun lived up to that suggestion. :):

    Could be anywhere
It's too bad Jurassic Planet didn't show the effects of the gun better...but I suppose he was only using Hornady Lever-Evolution 325gr rounds.

Wind River - good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes...I'll have to check it out.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot that rifle was in Jurassic World too.

    Near the big river.
I have an SBL. It is a hoot to shoot and surprisingly accurate. It likes 420 gr flat nose cast bullets at .460" diameter, over a reasonable amount of IMR4895.

    Deer rifle for this year!!!

The OP's Marlin is the exact model I've been dreaming about for years. I always thought it was called the Alaskan brush hunter or some such? I was always planning to move back to the Northern Rockies though, and it never happened. Yet. So I talk myself out of a new rifle, sling, and deep stockpiles of ammo...

    Someday though, mountains or not.

Shoot one of those light weight Marlins a few times before you decide. I have both 444 and 45-70 and both are good hunting rifles, recoil gets your attention with 400 grain and up loads.

I did when I was younger, having to get your fillings reset after a shooting session just doesn't appeal anymore.:)

Do you reserve these guns for hunting or have you crafted softer loads for more frequent shooting?

Both. The 444 has slow microgrove so everything in there comes out hot with a 265 grain jacketed bullet. It's very light, has a WW trigger, and a scope so it's a little tricky to use. An excellent carry rifle with good woods range and real power. The 45-70s see mostly cast lead but I do have a load with a compressed level of 3031 and a 405 grain jacketed bullet that is both accurate and uncomfortable to shoot in the Marlin CB.

The 444 is going out in the woods here this season, I expect better range than the Marlin 44 mag with compete pass through from any direction.

Yeah I can imagine being 5'9" and 150lb, dropping the hammer on one of those things would bowl me over ass over applecart. Not a fan of the rail either. But my mind will formulate any excuse to have one. I watch a lot of westerns. John Wayne was a suitable surrogate for me own Da when he was away at work, growing up. I watch those films now and I get all melty over a quick lever action and a six iron. Impracticalities be damned!

I have an older Marlin 1895 Guide Gun with the factory ported barrel and I really like it. The 45/70 does recoil but if you can shoot a 30-06 you won't mind the 45/70.

I am considering hunting with my 1895SBL this year, but time to get a scope on and work up loads is running out quickly. Was thinking maybe something fixed, like a 4x. Don't want to highjack, but does anyone have a suggestion? Oh, and I hate shooting this thing off the bench.

Watch where you put the scope.

Personal preference of scopes on lever action would be a Leopold ultralight 2.5 or 4 power. Plenty of eye relief looks good mounted on the action or a scout scope. Scout scopes are a acquired taste. Big loop levers are available from many makers now.
