I have recently gotten into shooting and am able to hit as far as the range allows. Are there clubs or contests where everyday folk can participate?

The first long range match of the year is in Oak Ridge Tennessee the first Sunday of March. So you have some time to get healed. Saturday is 200, 300, 600 yards. Sunday is long range at 1,000 yards. It is a good time to meet the shooters on the Army team. They usually show up from Benning. Be prepared to eat pizza and drink beer afterward..

So this is open to anyone? And is it prone, 3 position or what?

    Why not.... I Like donuts...:):

I shot my first long range match a lot of years ago in Harris Minnesota. They made me bring donuts but they taught me how to use a sling.

Bowler299- check out the Shooting Sports thread for 22 rimfire long range. It's precision, long range (bullet drops 18 inches from 100 meters to 150 meters) and you have to deal with changing conditions. Everything you want to experience at 600-800 yards but with rimfire costs.

I totally agree with this. However, 50 yard prone smallbore matches are held everywhere almost every weekend and are just as challenging. It is an old saying that the road to 1,000 yards starts at 50 yards. But 100 yard Palma matches are out there too.
