Bought this Lightning from 1893, finish and bore are good for it's age and it has an intact fore end which you often see replaced. Missing some parts and while the butt stock isn't original I have it fitted and I'll shape it up close. Adding this to my Colts shooting 32-20, this rifle has the aftermarket screw set that was offered to help with chambering on the 32-20 models, sort of like the Magpul of the 1890s.

Got the wood fitting done, OK job considering my amateur skill set. Now I'll see about finishing the new walnut to match the 125 year old hand guard. Still looking for some parts.

Happy memories of shooting up water heaters with a Colt Lightning in .38-40.

Broken appliance hunting is a fun and time honored tradition. The last time I shot a water heater, I used a Remington rolling block carbine in 11mm Mannlicher (blew big holes right through it) and then finished it off with a few rounds of surplus U.S. Air Force .38 Special tracer. The tracer rounds were quite weak and stopped inside the first wall of the water heater and set the insulation on fire. My buddy (whose private range we were on) freaked out and ran down range with an empty bucket, filled the bucket from standing water a few feet away, and put the fire out. I laughed at him for making such a big deal out of it considering we are both Knob Creek veterans and his range was quite muddy.
