I bought a Mosin from Classic Firearms and to say the least it was A LOT more rusted than what I was expecting. I want to strip off as much rust and pitting as possible, then plan to put on a cheap home bluing kit. I'm looking for suggestions on a solution or method that is easy and effective to strip off the rust. I was thinking CLR or even vinegar might work but I wasn't sure of any adverse effects they might have on the weapon, such as the bore (which is actually in good shape). Any advice of ideas would be much appreciated.

I don't have advice on the rust, but thanks for showing what those Mosins looked like. I have a feeling the pictures they were using were not quite representative of the guns you'd get (granted, they did say they would have rust in the description).

The description was clear about the rifles having rust and pitting. I just wasn't expecting the rifle to have as much as it did. It is a functioning rifle, and by no means is this post a jab at Classic Firearms. I have purchased several other guns from them, including other Mosins, and all have been great. I think in this particular case my expectations were just too high.

Look up electrolysis, it works on badly rusted cast iron. If all the parts you want to clean are steel I would think it would work on them, research it well though. Not sure what effect it would have on removing the bluing.

I use electrolysis all the time on "new" old guns with rust issues. It works amazing and will remove ALL the rust without harming the metal (as long as you don't get carried away). It is VERY easy to do. Try it, you will be surprised.

First off let me say I am not a gunsmith nor have I ever applied any bluing or other finish on a gun. Having said that, so long as the bore is good and you plan to re-finish it anyway what about plugging the barrel & chamber and just sand blast it or soda blast it? That would strip off the rust and expose the good metal underneath while also removing any other contaminates that may be on the surface

I think that would be the best option, but I don't own a sand blaster and I think the cost of even a cheap blaster would outweigh the cost of the gun. Good idea, but not economical in this case.

Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner concentrated gel and medium steel wool. It doesn't take a lot, just a pea sized dob on the steel wool and it will turn the rust into an orange goo that wipes off. Do small areas at a time and it will NOT take off any original blue or even scratch a good spot of original blue. If you want the original blue off as well then use the same product with a Scotchbrite pad and only the clean metal will remain. Their Gun Blue is just as easy to reblue the weapon after you are done cleaning.

I tried all the cold blues but I keep coming back to this one. Gloves, a heat source, cotton balls, the blue paper shop towels and one of their blue kits is all you need. Enough to do 3-5 whole guns if you aren't wasteful. You can go over what bluing is already there or start from the metal in the white.

    Thanks for the advice.

Is this the kit you are talking about? https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Wonder-...pID=41jjOfYhhzL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

That is the Gun Black which will work as well. Some Mosins were on the black side, there is a Gun Blue if you desire a blue instead of black.

I took Mongo59's advice and orderd the gun black restoration kit. While waiting I thought I'd try some "prep" work and see how it would turn out. There was so much pitting and rust on the bottom that I took a brass wire wheel attached to my drill and knocked as much crud off I could. The pitting was much deeper than anticipated but to my surprise the original bluing stayed. Luckily the worst of the damage is on the bottom side of the rifle which will be covered when the stock is installed. I am by no means a gun smith, so any other help or tips would be much appreciated

It's probably too late at this point, but you should look into Rust Bluing -- it's likely how the gun was finished in the first place.
Instead of trying to remove the rust, detail strip it, remove any and all oil, boil or steam the parts to convert the red oxide (rust) to black oxide (bluing), and then card it. Successive layers of rust blueing can then be applied over the converted surface. This is what would have been done in armory-level maintenance.

Before begining the rebuling process I thought it would be wise to clean up the stock then put the rifle back together and check for function. The trigger is unbelievable smooth, but as you can see in the photos the stock needs refinishing as well. All I did to it was take Orange Goop hand towels, wipe it down, then scrub it with a sponge. I'm looking to hear what I should do to refinish the stock (teak oil, boiled linseed), or just leave it in the calico (spelling) colored form its in and just seal it.

BTW I don't think this will ever be a pretty rifle so making it an ugly duckling might work in this case.

If I remember I started with 320 grit and moved to 1000grit after using an iron and rag soaked in water to steam the stock and raise any indentations. I applied 3 coats of stain and 3 coats of poly. It turned out really nice but like an idiot I traded it for a loss.

Rusty Mosin Nagant is the thread title, but would also be a cool forum handle. That is all.

I have begun applying Tru oil to the stock. I'm on the 2nd coat and plan to apply at least one more. I was really impressed with the color change after the 2nd coat. Included are some of the results after applying the tru oil to the stock and also some pics using the Blue Wonder Gun Black kit on the metal parts. I am by no means an expert and I'm sure a gun smith would have gotten results 100% better, but so far my result is worlds away from where the rifle was when I got it. Most of these imperfections will be covered by the stock anyway so I'm not aiming for absolute perfection.

If you plan to use a blue wonder kit i highly suggest you take your time in prepping the parts as well as ensuring you have a good heat source before applying the gun black or the blue. There were a few areas that I had to redo because they were not hot enough for the agents in the gun black to take effect. Most importantly take Mongo59's advice take your time and work in small areas.
