Following up on the Bear creek trainwreck...

In THIS market, say I've got 5 or 6 hundred to spend on my very first A.R.
Now let's say I do not want a PSA or Bear creek, or insert your favorite cheapie here....

What do I buy? Who sells a decent entry level AR in my price range that won't melt down into a steaming pile of Hooskerdoodle after the first 1000 rounds?

Build one, or keep an eye on classifieds. Psa BCA kind of dominate that bracket. Smith and Wesson will give you barebone basic

    Ruger MPR $598.00
    https://www.rkguns.com/ruger-ar-556-mpr-223-5-56-semi-automatic-30rd-18-rifle-8514.html

Great rifle for the money I have witnessed them complete a class with no issues plus backed up by a big company if you have a issue. This rifle has many great features already on it including a sweet two stage trigger that would save money over any other in its price range.

    S&W M&P sportII $549.00
    https://www.rkguns.com/smith-wesson-m-p15-sport-ii.html

Good rifle witnessed them shoot well in classes not quite as well made as the Ruger IMO still a good value backed by a big company.

I can only comment on what I have witnessed “run” with better AR’s and performed well.

Its time to buy now the pre election jitters will hit soon !

Buds guns down by Smokey Mountain Knife Works recently had stacks of Smith&Wesson and Ruger AR's for about $500-550. For the money for a starter AR how can you go wrong. Otherwise step up to the $1000 range and there are many, many more outstanding choices. Best of luck.

Brad 69 hit it perfect. Buy the MPR. Can't get a better rifle for anywhere close to that price range. The two stage trigger is a super nice bonus on it too. That's where my money would go if I were buying a new rifle at a lower price point. I just recommended it to a friend yesterday, and I've been considering buying one "because" for myself.

Man, I bought my AR when the S&W Sport first debuted, and they were more than some of these great new models.

Golden Age of modern sporting rifles these days.

Wow, I hadn't looked at them before, but that MPR is a heck of a lot of features in a rifle for $600!!

It's also very accurate. This was from today. 50yds with federal xm193. Just resting the front of the rifle on ammo box. 1.5x4 power scope.

I would save up a little bit more and get a Colt 6920 OEM-1:https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/2679/colt+car+556+16+no+furniture
    -$10 for a cheap HG
    -$5 for a Trigger Guard
    -$25 for a MagPul BUS
    -$15 for a cheap Mil-Spec Stock

For a little over $800 you will have a solid AR that will last well over 10,000 rds
Isn’t that counter productive to the OPs scenario? Why not suggest he save a few more weeks, eat Ramen and buy a BCM? Or go full gucci and suggest he get a SCAR 16 instead?

If an extra $200 is going to make or break somebody's overall lifestyle, then maybe spending that $500-$600 isn't a good idea. YMMV

If I were familiarizing myself with a new weapon system I would much rather spend that extra $2-300 (remember OP said 400-500) on magazines and a thousand rounds of premium steel case ammo

I've got two PSA / Anderson lowers builds, both with several thousand rounds on them. No meltdowns yet. But I'd go with the Ruger for you.
