Using Russian military surplus ammo, (I have several Mosin's) most will shoot under 2 moa, don't think any shoot 1 moa or better.

I would say best is 2-3 inch groups (as already mentioned). Worst is pie plate accuracy at that distance. These guns were being cranked out by the Soviets trying to turn the tide against the Germans. They can vary in quality and accuracy from rifle to rifle. "They are basically spears that happen to also fire bullets."

    I have owned several M44's M38's M91/30 and M27 over the years.

I am getting 4.5" groups with the yellow tip ammo. Not sure what the grain of the bullet it is. I reloaded with some 174gr SMK, and was able to get 1.75" group my smallest at 100 yards.

The yellow tip is heavy ball. 180 grain if I remember correctly. My regular Mosins didn't care for it, but my Finn M39 did pretty well with it.

I tested a variety of 7.62x54R through two Finnish Mosins and a PU. The best groups I could muster with them were 2-4 moa. Most of my ammo testing was done using 5 shot groups. The PU would do better with match ammo. A M44 should give you 4 moa. Don't be surprised if you groups are larger

Highly depends on barrel and ammo. Had one shot 2”MOA as mentioned. Another same ammo has shot out barrel (no rifling on bottom of barrel) it would shoot ~5” MOA at 5 yards and keyhole at the same time!

I've heard that the M44s were sighted in and optimized to be fired with the bayonet extended. How many of us would really do that? Just saying.
Might explain some of the groupings, but interested in reports on with and without bayonet extended comparisons.

Yup. That stuff is a little hard to find now, there used to be a lot of Bulgarian stuff on the market.

I've tried it, it wasn't noticeable and I looked like a doofus doing it...

Ahhh, and those 44's will make those ears bleed...
    Ear plugs and muffs.

    2"-3" for a Russian M44 is acceptable, tighter if it's a Polish M44.

Of course, the user has a lot of influence on the grouping.

You have to do a few shots of vodka and run screaming toward the target while firing to get the best results. :):

The Polish M44's are the nicest ones.
I have an unissued one and the fit and finish are great.
Noticeably better than the unissued Russian ones I have.

Agreed. The Polish are the nicest. I still have the Romanian I got from you several years ago. (also very nice, btw) :)
