Howdy! I recently bought this slightly exercised Ruger number one to use for deer hunting here in Indiana. This thing is drop dead gorgeous and has a Lupold 3 x 9 x 40 compact scope mounted on the top of it. It looks to beBetter finished than the newer Ruger ones coming out now. Question, does anybody know how to date this to see what year it was manufactured?

Not very old. Think they did em when Indiana changed PCR spec to 1.8 max. Maybe the yr before....whenever that was.

They sold out quick and IIRC tjey brought em back out last yr or this yr.

Love #1s. Scope options kinda limited, even if using two offset rings. I may be odd, but can only tolerate one offset ring , at rear position. Two for me kills the looks. So if I get another, will look for older Leupold to fit.

Had a 1B for years. Recently an RSI.
looked for a .460 and they were sold out, this when IN first went 1.8.

Glad you found a pretty one. They are cool. Even w their quirks and risks.....once youve had one, you want to always have one.

My next will be 1A in . 243 win or 250 sav.

Wow... Thanks guys. I'll keep ya posted. Ya know..... I've been shooting Hornady 200gr. factory loads out of this thing. It's kind of punchy on the shoulder, yet a blast to shoot!
I was wandering if any of you would have any idea on the muzzle velocity on this thing. I can find "stock" info on the 460 out of std. pistol barrel lengths, but nothing on the longer barrels. Ideas?

IMHO #1 stock design tends to send more whop to the shooter. All.ive ever shot were red pads and its more of a buttplate than recoil pad LOL.

Hot .45-70 were wicked fun. Twenty yrs later I doubt Id find them as entertaining.

Buddy had a 1S he ran full throttle.

The .45 Raptor is basically a .460 S&W for ARs and uses .460 load data so this performance data for the Raptor should give you a good idea of what to expect:

    • 200-Grain Hornady FTX = 2650-2850 FPS
    • 225-Grain Honorary FTX = 2400-2600 FPS
    • 230-Grain Sierra FMJ RN = 2400-2600 FPS
    • 240-Grain Hornady XTP MAG = 2400-2600 FPS
    • 250-Grain Hornady FTX = 2300-2500 FPS
    • 300-Grain Hornady XTP MAG = 2000-2300 FPS

Keep in mind this is with a 16" barrel, with the longer barrel on your NO. 1 your results may be a bit higher.

Man, I've loved the look of the Ruger No. 1 for going on 30 years now.

I think that if I'm ever lottery rich, I'll set about collecting 1 of each. Just to have a hobby.

    Pops had a clean 4 digit '06 B model.
Seen a few around, but they usually missing the vertically split Ruger rings.
He sold it to a collector years ago.

I think the AB to be hideous. The RSI not a looker either.
Not a van of the V. Think the quarter rib, for all it's ^%$#@ to actually make the rifle.

B or A model for me.

22" barrel if an A model.

The .44 mag was on the list, til I saw the 20" bbl.
If I had the money I'd have an A model in .35 rem.
600 bucks last I checked to have one rebarreled to that (never offered).

Sold my RSI (bought with intention to be changed- but shot well so left as is for 2 yrs).
Got a .35 rem pump 760 for 500. It works great.

    So maybe a #1 in .300 savage ;)

In looking at the Ruger Serial number Lookup, I see that I have a model 11340. Nothing to speak of pertaining to the various alpha models on that site. Perhaps a 1-S given it's caliber and Alex Henry fore end.....?

There is the Tropical w alex henry (H)
    The medium sporter (S)
    And the light sporter (A)
These have iron sights and quarter rib ( and alex henry forend).
They also did a quarter rib no sight light sporter w AH forend.
may have done mediums that same way.
Possibly catalogued at one time, maybe special non catalogued.

The common AH variants are light and medium sporters and the tropicals.

Lotsa guys bought the .45-70 S because it looked like a tropical but was cheaper to shoot LOL.

It looks good w the 22". Later they did longer bbl versions. The 22 is the looker.

And IMHO looks better than any H

Thank ya kindly Mr. Hookeye! Yeah.... I'm gonna tune this bad boy in fer deer this year. It'll get 200yds easy, but at 250, I gotta holdover. Don't like all of that. I'll probably be hunting the woods anyway and not shoot over 60yds.
BTW - I like you named your location! Think I'll change mine to Hickabilly Heaven (Hanover).

Oh man I'd have snapped that up so fast.
A 460 single shot is my dream gun for FFg loads with .452 cast.

Well... For what it's worth, I shot a string of reloads yesterday with Barnes 200gr. bullets. Fastest speed was 2940FPS. Yeah.... it felt like it too!

MOST INTERESTING! How would ya do all of that??? Suspect building yer own cartridges, but what to use for a primer? What would be the weight of your .452 cast? Approx MV?

With FFg I'd use the hottest mag pistol primers on the shelf to promote cleaner burns.
Would use a drop tube and a slight amount of charge compression.
Would probably first try loading powder, then card wad, lube cookie, card wad and bullet (always using up all the available space).
I'd have fun with every mold in the fun box... after all, how else could I know what works!
A regular old 250 45 Colt slug could likely do as well as anything but a heavier bore rider design could help free up more powder space.
Velocity; not a lot compared to smokeless. Probably max out a 250 grainer around 1300FPS.
