Well I liked the 7mm Rem mag but am getting older.
So picked up a .280 rem w good wood.
Figure it will be my mule deer killer.

Hopefully it likes Fed Blue box stuff.

Ruger #1, needs a new scope.
Figure a reg VX2 3-9X is good enough.

    Was thinking a 1A in .243 and maybe a 1B in .25-06.
But this one popped up w good wood so I said why not?

Have zero exp with the .280 round or mule deer.

I have no experience with the 280, but my go to hunt most anything out west rifle is a 28 nosler which is just a fast 280. If a 280 doesnt drop it I. The lower 48, it's not the guns fault.

No offense, but an old classic needs a classic looking scope and Leupold deked their vx3i and made em more angular.

So i have to go used VX 2 or 3 or maybe II or III

Maybe later. Its just a 26" standard w no sights.
I removed the old style scope.
The rings are oiled and bagged. Old oil had gone rancid.
The stock is figured same on other side.
    Forend is straight grain.
Old ones oil finished so lack the amber/red tones of the other redpads.
Looked kinda dull and boring, color wise.

    Beautiful stock! Very nice wood.

280 rem is gtg. Can push 175s to 2700 in the Hornady data (24")-- more than adequate. A 162 ELD-X at 2800 will give you plenty of legs for any reasonable shot.

That is definitely some bodacious furniture. WoW. I am a big fan of the Leupold VX2. I like the fast-focus ocular and the LRV reticle. I wish they hadn't dropped that line.

Depending on who you talk to, the Ruger collecting market is kinda soft, at least on the Number Ones.

Kinda sucks as a shooter, the cartridge/ model just isnt popular around these parts. Itd be better in a varmint cartridge......or since in .280 rem, a different configuration ( not the heavy B model ).

So its kind of an odd duck

But from a collecting standpoint, its a bit of an odd duck....less than 100 no prefix in that cartridge/ config.

No box or papers.......and it has been shot. Proly a 98% rig w better than normal wood ( even back then ).

If it shoots im keeping it. Already seeing how much a mule deer hunt is gonna cost ( and having resulting chest pains ).

Have been around this enough to know the game.

Its only worth what somebody is willing to pay.
I have passed on other newer ones w lesser wood.

IMHO a B is a bipod long ranger.

I wonder if they ever built the 1A in .260 rem.
That might be a cool project gun whenever I score a donor

Nice looking rifle! You're probably a bit lucky to find an unmolested one with the trend toward giving .280s the AI treatment lately in an attempt to turn it into magnum.

If the cost of a mule deer hunt is giving you chest pains, I wouldn't advise checking out any elk, caribou, or moose hunts!;) At least with mule deer you still have some relatively reasonable options to look at, especially if you're willing to go unguided. Not to mention it is a lot easier to pack out a mule deer by yourself than an elk!

I went elk way back, unguided. Cool area but not as uninhabited now. Would not lug this rifle up the mountains thats for sure ( 20 plus yrs later ).

My sis had a monster muley in her yard often. But they moved.

    Dunno about access to surrounding.

I dont have any old Vari x scopes around.
Newer stuff is thicker in turret body and wont clear offset ring in medium height.

If only Ruger had that rear ring slot back a half inch.
    But they dont.

EGW makes a pic rail. Aint pretty. High w offset at rear would work, but would be too high.

This, added to the old 1022 fingergroove shooting like crap......has me rather annoyed at Ruger.

Non prefix Number 1s are collectible. This configuration is 26" w just the rib.....what would today be known as the B model.

Common model in the non prefix ones. But being
280 rem gives it decent rarity points. ....per the classic sporting arms- collecting Number One table.

Unfortunately this gun has no box or papers and was hunted. Bit of rust pit on tang and grip cap. One spot along buttstock/ receiver edge.

Stocks grip cap can be swapped out.

The other....hurts the value. No rust.....itd be a 2K rifle. GB prices are high (asking) now anyway, plus its right before deer season

The rings, vert split.....are made of unobtanium. Fetch 300 plus if found.

Am torn on getting an old Leupold at stupid price to hunt this gun, or say to hell with it and just ditch it

Rather have a custom done in stainless.
But man oh man this one is pretty
