Wanting to get a rifle (shotgun not out of the question) specific for keeping in the 5th wheel when traveling that I won't have an issue with, if such a thing is even possible. I would like to do some shooting in the desert out West so it won't be "just" for camper defense.

From what I can gather a lever action or semi auto with a fixed mag, 10 rounds or less. Is there something I am overlooking? Is it possible to have a "tool removed" magazine?

California & Maryland seem to be the states I need to worry about.

    Prefer to stay with calibers I already own, .223, .308, 45lc, .44mag .357mag, 9mm, 45acp but won't rule out 10mm & 45-70.
    Any suggestions?

Another thing I am thinking about is traveling into Canada, are there FFL's close to border crossings that have lockers or other holding type services?

If I can recall correctly, I thought a shotgun was the only thing legal to carry in a mobile domicile? Somebody with quick Google - fu can help. I'm basically brain dead at this point trying to remember all the bull crap myriad of laws meant to trap an honest prudent person.

Obviously a gangbanger or thug would have an illegally converted machine gun in their repertoire of weapons. Oh and a ninja sword too!

    IANAL!!!!

But i dont think there is any discernment between rifle v shotgun for such a thing. The 357Lever IMHO is possibly the best option. That or a cap and ball setup.....

Several years ago my FIL was traveling to Alaska, did some research at the time & bought a snake charmer .410. He stated they put a seal on it when he entered & checked the seal when he exited into AK. What I read from the link from Jettaknight (thank you by the way) it seems that there are other options, which I need to get more info on so that maybe I can get a camper gun or 2 that will be gtg various places.

Bears and large cats are another concern some of the places we plan to travel and hike as well. Really stinks that I have to figure out the strictest infringements before leaving for a long trip and restrict my travel arsenal accordingly.

You could just avoid those restrictive states.

For a rifle a lever gun is the best! Get a Marlin Model 94 or Winchester/clone Model 92. Some of the short ones will only load 9 rounds and one in the chamber. Stay away from the Model 73's and 66 clones as they have a week action. The Marlin 94 and Winchester/clone 92 both can handle level 2 loads all day. It sounds like the .44 mag or .45 Colt would be better in some areas that you want to go to. A 200 gr or 250 gr RNFP round loaded in the Ruger range should do for small bear down to a tree rat.

I have shot SASS from the mid 1990's and have used the rifles I listed. Don't get a bottleneck round as not legal to use in the field to take game. The .357 may not be legal for game in some states.

Some good places to get a custom rifle in no order:

A lever action rifle with 24" barrel and full magazine (14 rounds .45 Colt) is legal in Commiefornia.

    .
A lever gun in 45 Colt is tough to beat for hunting. Good loads will drop anything critter wise inside it's effective range. A Henry would be a suggestion, but a Marlin is just as good. As an example I put a 325 grain cast lead slug through a whitetail doe lengthwise. At that distance it would go through anything.
