No I don't have one, yet, but I want one bad. I have always liked these guns, but have never actually seen one in person. Anybody here have any experience with one? I always try to keep a little saved money on hand, just in case i run across one that is reasonably priced.

I almost bought one years ago....$250 I think, wish I had, the quality was fantastic, and just a beautiful gun. Good luck, and I hope you find one.

I have my Grandfathers Model 99 in 300 Savage. Also a picture of the Christmas morning Grandma gave it to him in 1957. This cartridge will do everything that the .308 will do. Good luck finding one for less than 800 bucks.

A 99 chambered for .308 is good for everything from bunnies and squirrel to elk.
My dad got an elk with his .300 Savage so the .308, yeah it'll work.
For the every day table fare all you need is a tiny bit of pistol powder, a light weight .32ACP slug

and a good recipe for dumplings.

You guys didn’t help, now I want now worse. If I find one in 300 savage or 250-300; is ammo available? I think these are about the sexiest looking guns made.

Hornady loads both and brass is available from a few other brands as well if you reload. FYI, 99s chambered in .250 usually command a bit of a premium, especially online, since they are not as common as those chambered in .300.

Had a Savage .300 as a kid. Many water heaters fell to it.:D

I do not like the rights. IIRC I went with a Lyman 66. That helped.

Rifle heats up quickly and groups open up (may not be concern to you but when faced with charging water heaters and an AMC Gremlin), you will thank me!

I've always wanted to download some .30-30 with a similar load. Something quiet and slow. Do you need to fill the case with something inert to prevent 'splosions?

A "medium" pistol powder like Uique usually works in larger cases. Sometimes you will notice better accuracy with a bit of fluff to hold it against the primer. I get to use dacron batting left over from the wife's quilts.

One of my "some day" projects is replacing the stocks on a really abused 99. The exterior metal is in rough shape too. If I get it done and get it rebored to .338, that could be a real fun gun. Would probably get it parkerized seeing as the exterior is sooo ugly.

I’ve got a 99 in .300 Savage. It’s a very nice rifle to shoot, and a beautiful rifle to look at. You can still get ammo for it. Kicks worse than my .300 Win-Mag though!

It’s mainly a safe queen for me these days.

My '35 EG had a flat plate, so .300 savage had some bump. Ran the Hornady Superformance stuff. Shot good.

And was well below to the love tap my .300 winmag 700BDL gave.

I’ve got a Savage 99 chambered in 300 savage that was made in 1951. I’d say it’s in 90% or better condition..... just a jewel. My favorite rifle and one no amount of $$$ could buy. Bought it the day my youngest grandson was born... when they plant me it will be his. I’ve owned a multitude of leverguns and the 99 is just heavenly!!!

You wont be sorry with a Model 99. I have two now both late model ones from the 70's. One is the 99A with a 20 inch barrel when the gun was re-introduced with a 1 in 10 twist 250-3000. It is accurate after I messed with the forearm mounting and it kills deer fine with 100 grain Sierra PH at 2850 fps. The second one is also a 250-3000 in a 99C Deluxe . That one was found in storage shed and I ams still working on it. The triggers on late model ones have stamped parts but the gunsmith I take my work to smoothed them up and lightend the pull a bit. They handle very nicely and shoulder like a good fitting shotgun. I am thinking about one in 308 as well.
