Took 3 rifles today. All w new scope mountings.

Rem 760 in .35 rem running Hornady 200gr Leverevolution.
    Scope a VX1 last version 2-7X (previously had a 4x compact).

Ruger M77MKII "All Weather .308win, running Hornady American Whitetail 150 gr.
Scope is the Trijicon 3-9X that came w it, but moved back a little now.

Ruger #1 (pre B model) in .280 rem. Federal 150gr premium (partitions).
Scope is Freedom VX 3-9X (had it laying around)

Fired 10 rounds of .308 in the supposedly hard kicking Boat Paddle stock. It aint bad.
Fired 10 in the #1........for as heavy as it is, it kicks about like the M77.
The .35 rem has a buttplate, no pad........and it proly the more comfy of the three.

It also has the lighter trigger (stock).
The M77 and #1 need trigger jobs. Period.

The #1 did 2" for 3 shots w no cool down, at 100. Dang near straight horizontal dispersion.
Did that twice. Bullseye one shot, left or right an inch on the other. Could be an inch off on first shot.
Forend screw was set at 20 in lbs. Will try again at 15 in lbs.

The M77 did 1.25", for 3 with no cool down. Two close and the third opening. Supposed to have more front action screw torque than what I had.
50 in lbs what I set it for.
Really, w heavy trigger.........not worth worrying about 1.25" group size.
Also, the Trijicon scope is a triangle on post deal, orange.
Dunno how much aiming error due to orange triangle on orange target dot.
Think up close, using the whole triangle as an aiming point (like a red dot sight).........the scope would be pretty cool.

For 100 yards, eh, gimme crosshairs (duplex preferably).

The 760 was a champ. 1" 3 shot groups, no cool down, at 100. Was 1" low. And maybe .5" high at 50 yards.
    Wonderful old rifle.

    So the verdict?

Of the three, the 760 gets the nod. Its taken 2 bucks so far (only shot at two) and will be heading out for its 3rd season.
I have a Steyr Prohunter .30-06 already zeroed sitting in the back of the safe (1 " for 5 shots @ 100). It has the factory settings on the trigger (screws sealed).
Need to pop that crap off and adjust, is usable as is.

The M77 MKII is good to go, but really needs a lighter trigger. There is a spring for a couple bucks that drops it 30% they say.
Might be good enough. Not gonna drop a hundred for an adj trigger, this rifle is listed for sale here.

The #1? Damn she's pretty. Shoots like crap. Worth investing some time. effort and reloading to see if it comes around.
Definitely change the scope to an older gloss Leupold. It is an old one, so does have an adjustable trigger. Will set it lighter.

So 40 rounds from the bench. I aint beat up, but can feel it.
    Wore only a T shirt.

    No big deal.

That's a fantastic looking table of rifles, Hookeye! I've always had a sweet spot for those M77 All-Weather's, something about stainless and bolt guns just works! I have a No. 1 in 257 Roberts that is an absolute tack driver with handloads as well. But that 760 might take the cake for coolest gun on the table. I've only seen a handful of those the past few years and they are just....cool!

I was gonna say in the other thread, I wasn't sure I'd believe the tail about the .308 M77 being a hard kicker.

I put a Timney trigger in my GSSR, but that's too expensive for a gun to sell.

I have light red marks on my shoulder from todays shooting session.
I shot them all like varmint guns so took the full whack each time.

Yeah theres recoil. Big whoop de doo. It aint bad, about the same for all really.

Could the Rugers be more polite? Sure.
    Ruger pads suck.
And for whatever reason #1s whap harder than they should.

Yup. Wasnt getting half inch groups at 100.
Dont think an issue of recoil though.

    LOL

With a coat these all would be way nicer.

Think people just lack concentration, follow through or are wimps.

For an avg sized guy these are all doable. With ease.

Can't go wrong with a 35 Remington. I tried all of the extremes in the pistol cartridge rifle game since it started and when I tried the 35 Remington in my Contender I stopped looking. That being said after I get a couple in the freezer, I am going to switch to a 13" Contender pistol in 45 Colt.

I just fine tuned my sight in on my M70 in 30/06. Beautiful wood stocked rifle made in 1968. I didn’t get any pictures, but I sighted in 1.5 high at 100 yards and three shots were all right under 3/4”. That works for me. I’m using IMR 4064 and Sierra game king 165’s.

Well, I now own a Sako Forester in .243win.
On the hunt for another old gloss Leupold.
    4 or 6x, maybe 2-7x.

Minor clean up this time LOL.
Couple ring screws have boogered slots. Old oil has varnished on the bolt.

Its lightweight....very. Why I snagged it. Not.mint, wood has a few dings. Could refinish ( no pun intended ). Is good as is..

Hunting rifle. Another ding once in a great while aint gonna matter.

If only that M70 was five years older.

Checked em again yesterday. 3 from the 760 into a cloverleaf of overlap, in the Shoot n See orange dot at 50 yards.
The M77 punched the center of a dot (with heavy stock trigger).
Got a scope (gloss Vari X II ) for the #1.

But now I have a Sako Forester that needs a scope.............figures.
Rifle is from 63 or 64, but has the windage rings w "spain" on the bottom.
Try to get a set of Leupolds for it, maybe a M8 of 4 or 6x

Took the '67 Pre B Ruger #1 in .280 w orig vert split rings.
The Ruger system clamp to the quarter rib is not independent of the lower rings screws, all screws thread to other side.
So you have to align scope, as you tighten rings and rings to quarter rib.
You can get things out of alignment. And run out of scope adjustment.

That means loosening and trying again, repeat until you get it.

No wonder they quit making those rings LOL.

Swapped out to newer style and it lined up.
But I wasted a trip to the range, and was bummed enough after the ring swap to not go back.

So...............now I have to take the #1 back out, and the old Sako Forester. Pre Garcia, but had Garcia rings.
It has Leupold rings now and my junker Freedom VX 3-9X that was laying around, now rides atop.

Its pretty light weight. Stock is not free floated, but will shoot and see how it does, as is.
    Hopefully decent weather next week.

Had about enough of this wind stuff.

Am happy the old #1 showed improvement w ammo change :)
Think with minor experimentation w forend and some reloading it will be pretty sweet.

The Sako is smoooooooth, and light weight. Got a set of used Leupold rings and said screw it, slapped my Freedom VX 3-9X on it.
    Good enough (and paid for).

So take it out sometime this week and see how it does w 100gr WW PP and 95gr DXP (.243 win).
