I'm up in the air between the 6.8 SPC in an AR-15, or the AR-10 in .308. Shooting out to 500 yards, and the ballistics are similar. Anyone have preferences?

The ballistics are NOT similar between the two rounds!!! That is a huge honking lie that many people who purchased 6.8 SPC rifles got hooked with. It is a lie.

The 7.62NATO (175gr OTM) round delivers TWICE the energy at 500 yards (versus the 6.8 115gr OTM). It is also traveling about 350 feet per second faster.

Please keep in mind that Remington recently DOWNGRADED their performance data for the 6.8 SPC by about 200fps so if you look at old ballistics charts you will have to lower velocity, lower energy and increase bullet drop (old velocity at muzzle was claimed to be 2800fps, revised downward to just over 2600fps and presumes a 24" barrel).

I have also been looking into building a higher powered AR. I wanted to go the .308 direction, but then I decided to stick with the AR-15 platform, instead of going a different direction into an AR-10. My build is going to be the 6.5 Grendel based off of ballistics and standard AR-15 parts.

If I were going to choose between the 2 in the OP, it would be .308 for sure.

I just saw this and don't have the ballistics in front of me, but dig into the 6.5 Grendel. It is an AWESOME AR platform and accurate as you will probably ever be. I absolutely LOVE this round and can't say enough good things about it.

Best of luck and safe shooting!

Try this chart, its an old one, one with the original inflated 6.8 SPC claims, but the rest of the chart is accurate. The 6.8 SPC numbers have to be downgraded on this chart, see the smaller chart above for some more accurate numbers regarding the 6.8 SPC.

So, what I'm hearing is Armalite AR-10. See, I'm glad I asked, I've been doing alot of research on the 6.8, and everything I read is very positive. I know that 'a .308 is a .308," as 243REM700 said, and I agree. But if Reminton designed this cartridge specifically for special ops and "quiet" military activities, it must be a decent round. Guess I'm going with the .308. Thanks for your opinions.

It looks like you made a wise choice, as some members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit are using the AR-10 platform with great success out to 1,000 yards.

Here is a quote from a match bulletin:

"The USAMU and the US Army Infantry Center will host the Army Small Arms Championships at Fort Benning, Georgia from 11 thru 24 March 2005. Disciplines will be rifle, combat rifle, combat pistol, and long range rifle. Rifle and pistol matches are fired with helmet and LBE."

"Long Range matches are at 600, 800, and 1,000 yards, shot with both iron and optical sights. Beginning in 2005 there are two classes: M14 and Sniper (Sniper will be fired with the M24, AR-10/SR25/MK11 with bipod)."

In addition to the ballistic differences melensdad points out, there's obviously a huge difference in availability between the two rounds. Hence - .308.
