The story told to me was the Indians knew that robbing the gold from the White man would slow their progress West.
The Indians also placed no value on gold, thus no desire to keep the soft metal. The earthen covered star concealed an entrance to a long natural tunnel caused by erosion. The nearly 100 yard long tunnel required crawling the entire distance until it opened up into a large cavern. The person that told me this had crawled thru this tunnel and upon exiting was noted to have a large amount of soot on his back and in his hair which apparently had been on the roof of this tunnel. Since the two guys were searching for water, and crawling down the tunnel had not located any, they placed the limestone back over the opening, covered it with dirt and continued on with the task at hand. 40-years ago, for several years, my family had rented an old farmhouse not to far from the bluff. We used an old well with hand pump for water. The well ran dry, the landlord and an Uncle of mine continued their quest to locate another source of water. The Uncle grew older, had a family and has not pursued the buried star or provided its exact location. He has told me on numerous occasions that he would only divulge the location to his only Son. The Son and my Uncle had a difference of opinion several years ago and have not conversed much since. Of course, I doubt very much if the lost treasure would be found at the end of this but it does make a person wonder.
Thanks for the rep. You might check back in the Evansville newspaper. They persons name was in there at one time.
