Match Time Change - 1:00 PM Start Time

Marion County Fish and Game's Texas Star Match will be this Saturday, November 28th at 1 PM. Setup will begin at 12:15 PM and we would appreciate the help of a few volunteers. The Safety Meeting (required for new shooters) will be at 12:45 PM to explain the rules. At 1:00 PM, we will begin shooting.

If the temperature is in the mid-40’s or warmer, we might be able to get one more bowling pin match in instead of Texas Stars. If it is colder than that, we’ll be shooting Texas Stars. My suggestion is that you come prepared for both. At this point the forecast is right on the line.

If you are willing to help as an RO or help keep score, that would be greatly appreciated. I am currently scheduled to be working, so Don B. will be running the match.

Next month the match will be on the third Saturday (12/19). The club's calendar showing a second match on 12/26 in not correct.

A bowling pin match at Marion County Fish and Game Association is a modified single elimination competition.
    A simplistic description is:
2 shooters compete against each other, each has their own table with bowling pins.
On each table 5 bowling pins are placed on a 4ft by 8 ft steel table about 1 foot from the front edge.
The shooters stand behind barrels on concrete slabs approximately 27 feet from the front edge of the tables.
On command from the range officer, the shooters commence firing at the bowling pins.
The winner is determined by who's last pin hits the ground first.
If you win, you progress in the bracket.
There's more to it than that, but thats the basic idea.

    For a Texas Star match:
There are two Texas Star targets and two popper steel targets downrange.
Two shooters each shoot the Texas Star Target in front of them, and then shoot the popper.
The winner is determined by which popper target is on the bottom.
In case you do not know what a Texas Star target is.
Its a spinning hub with steel plates on the end of each spoke. 5 spokes.
The plates fall off the spoke when hit.
The hub starts to spin when the first plate is hit.

There are some good shooters that participate in these matches and there of many of us who are not so good.
Either of these matches are excellent introductions to competitive shooting.
We usually have a few shooters each month that are novices, but they usually come back
    because its a blast.

Are there separate divisions for calibers?

For Texas Stars there is not. Handguns only. Iron sights only.

With bowling pins, we handicap for each shooter depending on the caliber and size of the gun. So it is possible to see someone with a .44 Magnum compete against someone with a Glock 42. The person with the .44 has to clear 5 pins 3' from the back edge of the table while the person with the pocket .380 only has to clear 3 pins 1' from the back edge. The rules on the indyrange.org are NOT up to date. For a bowling pin match, bring what you want to shoot and we'll take care of you. That being said, the game was designed to be played with full-size .45 ACP handguns.

All MCFG events are open to non-members, cost is $4 per bracket, we normally shoot 3 - 4 brackets per match, but you can shoot less if you so desire.

Rain and/or temperature will be the deciding factor(s) as to if its pins or stars.
In accordance with the mood of mother nature, Don will likely make the call at the range right before match time.
(I think John said he is working)

Thanks to everyone for being safe and pitching in to reset the plates.

Lots of "new" shooters showed up today.

The bay covers were effective and greatly appreciated. (and wired correctly, I'm told)

Thanks to Don for being stand in match director.
