Riley Conservation Club will again be hosting long range .22 rimfire events. It is patterned after a popular long range high power event, and down sized to rimfire to fit our range.

The purpose of this event is to simulate what might be encountered during a varmint hunt, with targets of various shapes/sizes and various distances within a specified time frame. This is an accuracy oriented event with a reasonable time element.

The desire is to put semi-autos, bolt guns, and single shots on an equal playing field within the time frame. As such, all rifles will be loaded/fired as single shot or with a 5 round mag limit. Multiple mags can be used. We typically shoot 20 shots in 8-10 minutes, then rotate shooters in the squad.

22 Long Rifle only, no 22 Mag or 17 caliber anything. Targets are sized and distanced in such a way that a 22 rimfire capable of 2 MOA can be competitive, so almost any Ruger, Savage, Remington, CZ, etc is capable. In 2019, the format will vary from month to month to appeal to shooters of various skill levels.

Reactive steel targets will be at 75, 110, 165, and 200 yards. Standard class shooters will have targets out to 165 yards, Master class will have targets out to 200 yards. You need a scope that tracks well with target turrets or uses a hash mark/mildot style reticle. Scoring is simple, targets are scored as hit or miss. Suppressors are allowed.

Shooting position is prone with bipod, soft filled backpack, or sling without bipod/bag. No sandbags, auxillary sling, monopods, or rear support other than the shooters hand/arm. No heavy glove, shooting jacket, or other accessory aid. Physically challenged shooters who are unable to shoot prone may shoot from a seated bench.

Shooters will be squaded. When not firing, shooters will be expected to spot/score for other shooters in their squad. This helps encourage single shooters to participate. We can accommodate 6 squads at one time.

$15 entry fee, Lewis class payback (payback schedule will be posted day of match). The Lewis payback allows lesser skilled shooters to share some of the pot.

Shooters can enter 2 guns, both in the same class or in different classes but they must be 2 different guns. You cannot shoot the same gun twice. A gun(s) may be shared and fired by multiple shooters. This is popular with shooting buddies and parent/youth.

There will probably also be the occasional weeknight match as daylight allows during warm months. Those dates will be announced separately.

2019 dates are as follows, all on Saturdays: March 30, and then 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] Saturday each month April thru Oct.

Here is some info on various aspects of this match:

Rule #1 – Come out, shoot, have fun.

We will probably discontinue the Novice class this year, or run it on a limited basis. Standard & Master classes will remain. It takes a hit percentage of 75% (twice) to move into Master class. Standard class targets are at 75, 110, and 165 yards. Master class will shoot at 110, 165, 200 yards.

There are 6 shooting positions in each relay. You will be engaging multiple targets at the same time as others. Talk with your spotter and make sure you shoot the correct target(s).

Like golf or tennis, you don’t need a lot of high dollar gear to have fun. A $400 gun/scope can suffice. You can go up from there, based on how much you enjoy the game.

Bench shooters can use a single layer bath towel under their bipod feet that extends back to their body. This is similar to the effect of having a bipod on a mat or rug and the bipod won’t slide on the table.

This is not a cut throat competition. While shooters strive to do their best, they are amazingly helpful to newcomers. Don’t be intimidated. Come out, shoot, enjoy the day and the experience.

Lewis style payback rewards shooters at different skill levels instead of a payoff to the same 3-4 top shooters each month. It is a substitute for the traditional AAA, AA, A, B classification, but without all the paperwork. Sometimes a good shooter can have a bad day and still win a bit of money, and popular at this event.

Shooters should be ready to shoot when it is their turn. If you spend your free time chatting instead of loading mags, that’s on you. You will get a chance to learn the effect of having to hurry to finish in your allotted time.

Red dot optics or iron sights are allowed, but not recommended. You still shoot against scopes. Targets are small & painted white on a sand background. They are difficult to see without magnification.

There is a brief shooters meeting immediately before the match. An opportunity to make last minute changes, announcements, or ask questions.

The sight-in period depends on the event format for that month.

Match director reserves the right to make decisions or rulings at any time or as needed. Your input is valuable and welcome, but don’t take it personally if a suggestion isn’t implemented. We can’t please everyone all the time.

Again, first match will the “20 Straight” on Saturday March 30. Start time is penciled in for 10:30am
