    FYI on the topic. Beware the newish BF-F8HP. Saw a recent review by a guy who was an EE and was playing around with his test toys. They still had some spurious emissions, but better than the 5W radio they replaced. (UV5R) However they advertise 8W of power but only spit out 6 IRL.

    Thanks for the insight, I know pretty close to zero about HAM and radios.

    I’m thinking of getting my technician and starting off with a Baofeng, but wasn’t sure how decent of a unit it was.

    These 888s are basically toys. I wouldnt use them for anything other than GMRS radios. But I dont think that is technically possible because they dont have the correct FCC certification as I recall. (would work on the frequencies, just dont have the correct stamp of approval) They are definitely not legal for FRS frequencies because the antenna can be removed. :rolleyes:

    Baofeng is the Raven Arms of the radio world. Yeah...it's a radio.

    Don't count on it to save your life.
