The focus of this course is to give an overview of two of Red Zone Threat Management’s core foundational courses. The context of all of the material is a weapons based environment where awareness of our own and our adversaries weapons is of paramount importance.

    Red Zone Prime

Red Zone Prime is the baseline empty hand foundation that places an emphasis on positional dominance and prioritizing tactics depending on the scenario. This gives a strong and adaptable platform for scaling violence from verbal de-escalation to restrain and control, to lethal force and weapons. Much of this program can be seen the book Red Zone Prime: A Foundation for Personal Protection but there is a big difference between reading the info and getting hands-on training.

    Material covered includes:
    Pre-Contact threat awareness and avoidance
    Managing pre-physical interaction
    Surviving the "sucker punch"
    Weapons awareness
    T-shirt chokes
    Positional dominance
    Multiple threat awareness

    Red Zone Knife Defense Ground

Our approach to edged weapons defense focuses much more on depth of knowledge than an accumulation of techniques. All of the techniques employed are gross motor which helps to make them more easily accessible in the heat of a confrontation. If we try to rely too heavily on fine or complex motor skills we will be in trouble when things go bad.

The goal of any weapons defense program that has any connection to reality is to exit the situation as soon as possible. In many cases, those who claim to teach edged weapon defense pay lip service to avoidance and escape and then spend an inordinate amount of time showing intricate (and highly inappropriate) disarms and counters. In the Red Zone program escape is not an afterthought, it is the entire focus. This means that all of our techniques and training methods revolve around creating a window of escape at the earliest opportunity.

Having said that, there are definite hands-on skills that can greatly reduce the amount of damage we suffer should we have to go hands on.

The focus of this workshop will be to focus on the most important skill sets we need to survive an edged weapon encounter.

Pre-contact strategies and avoiding “dead zones”
Setting a strong foundational understanding of an actual edged weapon assault
    Bull rush attacks and ambushes
Fouling the draw and nullifying the initial attack
    Having a technical “default” program
    The role of equalizers
    Fundamental control positions
    Ballistic counter attack strategies
    Strategic disengagement
    Realistic disarms
Introduction to surviving a grounded assault
    Getting up from the bottom"

"One of the most often neglected areas of grappling training is dealing with a situation where a knife is in play... One of the most often neglected areas of knife defense training is dealing with what happens if you hit the ground... This workshop will specifically deal with both of those areas so that students can get a complete view of what they can (and more importantly CAN’T) do in a grounded engagement against a blade. Knowing these skills can very well be the deciding factor as to who gets up off the ground and who stays for good. All of the drills are beginner friendly and all training will be done with progressive resistance. "

    About Jerry:
Jerry Wetzel is the founder of Red Zone Threat Management. He has been training exclusively in reality-based combat for over 15 years. In 1999, he founded Centerline Gym; an organization dedicated exclusively to researching the realities of violence and developing tools and tactics to deal with them. He has appeared in magazines and numerous instructional videos. Jerry is dedicated to discovering the TRUTH in combat. Not the fantasy of combat, not the Hollywood image of combat, and not the ritual of combat. To do this, he believes it is of utmost importance to take biological, psychological, emotional, and behavioral factors into account and then apply them to a resisting opponent under realistic conditions.

Super wish I could make it this weekend.

The 2 hour seminar is the only time I'm free and that turned into 7 hours of driving for a 2 hour seminar.

But dang I wish I could've made it this weekend. Jerry was very good.
