What are the minimum experience and requirements to be an instructor? Can anyone attend and be an instructor if they pass?
    There are no experience requirements.
If you pass you are an instructor.

I was just in this class with 11 other people. Several of them had zero training prior to this class.

Thank you for the question regarding the course.

Let me first encourage you both, and any other observers, that becoming recognized as a USCCA Certified Instructor is not simply showing up and passing the class as an automatic process.
It is correct that there is no arbitrary line of experience necessary to attempt the process of becoming certified.
If one were to suggest a certain level of "experience" or "requirements" that a student must obtain prior to seeking this system, who is to decide exactly where that line is drawn?
But taking these steps on the part of a student requires a certain drive and commitment, and they proceed through the course under the watchful eye, training, and guidance of a USCCA Training Counselor.
This Training Counselor (carefully trained, examined, and certified but the USCCA) has the authority and discretion of withholding the certification of any Instructor Candidate, and to continue working with them, until any weaknesses can be improved.

Our Certified Instructor candidates are not inventing their own curriculum, but are made thoroughly competent in the USCCA curriculum, which itself was crafted by military, law enforcement, and firearm experts/instructors with decades of experience.
The intent of this program is to have the Certified Instructor certification serve as a foundational level to train Americans first taking up firearms and their defensive use in responsible ownership.
The USCCA follows up this foundation with opportunities to grow in progressive steps in more advanced levels of teaching capabilities as the Certified Instructor shows the commitment and capability.

These Certified Instructors are also not set adrift in the waters of teaching, but stay in close contact with their Training Counselor in getting further guidance as well as the Instructor Support team of the USCCA, and must maintain a minimum number of students taught per year to keep their certification current.

Finally, each Instructor in the USCCA system must abide by a Code of Ethics as they are taught at the Candidate level, which includes the oath not to insult or slander other instructors' teaching styles, methods, or content. We believe that our own public standing will be elevated by the ethical way in which we conduct our business, and through our own teaching methods, conduct, and professionalism.
As those involved in firearm instruction and self-defense, we are all on the same team and should not partake in the practice of "eating our own".

Thank you for the question regarding the course.

You are welcome. I'm definitely interested in the various paths to becoming an instructor.

Let me first encourage you both, and any other observers, that becoming recognized as a USCCA Certified Instructor is not simply showing up and passing the class as an automatic process.
It is correct that there is no arbitrary line of experience necessary to attempt the process of becoming certified.

What is the failure rate among students who attempt the class?

This Training Counselor (carefully trained, examined, and certified but the USCCA) has the authority and discretion of withholding the certification of any Instructor Candidate, and to continue working with them, until any weaknesses can be improved.

What are the requirements for becoming a training counselor?

Our Certified Instructor candidates are not inventing their own curriculum, but are made thoroughly competent in the USCCA curriculum, which itself was crafted by military, law enforcement, and firearm experts/instructors with decades of experience.

So in this way it is similar to the NRA instructor program? In what ways is this certification different from the NRA instructor programs?

The intent of this program is to have the Certified Instructor certification serve as a foundational level to train Americans first taking up firearms and their defensive use in responsible ownership.
The USCCA follows up this foundation with opportunities to grow in progressive steps in more advanced levels of teaching capabilities as the Certified Instructor shows the commitment and capability.

Can you provide a link to the various levels?

As those involved in firearm instruction and self-defense, we are all on the same team and should not partake in the practice of "eating our own".

This is not my intention at all. I don't want to tear anyone down or disparage the instructor candidates or the course. I know nearly nothing about it. I think seeking training and certification is exactly what someone looking to be an instructor should do. They should take every training class they can.

That being said, I've been to a fair number of classes and observed people attempting to teach informally at a fair number of ranges. I assume these informal teachers are the pool of people interested in seeking certification.

I've witnessed enough attempts at teaching to know that not all instructors are equal. I wanted to understand more about the selection criteria and how exclusive the process might be. Thank you for your responses. They have been very helpful.

    Hi Jackson,

This is a good question and comes up almost anytime that someone posts a instructor certification course in this forum. The simple answer to this question IT DEPENDS. This is a entry level instructor certification that has no minimum experience requirements in order to attend or to pass. This is the same with other entry level instructor programs out there such as the NRA Basic Handgun Instructor Program. The student instructor needs to be able to demonstrate certain basic skills in order to pass and get certified. Now, does this mean that every Training Counselor with every organization in the world determines what is acceptable exactly the same? Hell NO!!! As a matter of fact some TC's might even let folks get certified who don't meet the mandated requirements of the organization they are with.

There are some instructor certification courses that have minimum experience and requirements in order to be able to attend. Here are just a few that I know of:

    1. NRA Law Enforcement Activities Division Handgun Instructor School - Requirements. A "sworn" law enforcement officer, or a retired law enforcement officer, member of the US Armed Forces, or full-time civilian firearm instructor employed by a law enforcement agency, or a full-time civilian contractor. Within this school there are even more requirements to attend specialty courses such as Tactical Shooting Instructor (which I am hosting this course this year).

    2. International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors - I cant remember the requirements that I had to meet to get in but they had a qualification that had to be done cold first thing on day one. If you did not pass, you went home no refund. I remember one guy getting cut out of about 14 of us.

    3. National Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association - This organization does not provide basic LE Instructor Certifications but rather provides advanced certifications to increase the knowledge and skills of professional firearms instructors. Also you must already have obtained a nationally recognized LE Instructor Certification in order to attend. They offer courses such as Advanced Firearms Instructor (I am hosting this course this year), Live-Fire CQB / Shoot House Instructor, Low Light Shooting Instructor, Covert Carry Instructor, Rangemaster, Live-Fire Training Casualty Care Instructor, Red Dot Sights for Duty Pistols Instructor, Variable Power Optics for Patrol Rifles Instructor, Live-Fire Vehicular Engagements Instructor (I am attending this course next month in PA join me if you like, or if you qualify to attend), Functional Performance Integration Instructor, and so on.

Truly I could go on and on with various programs that have requirements in order to attend and memberships needed (such as being active duty military or sworn law enforcement). But my rhetorical question is, do these requirements really make a big difference? Since I have been in these courses I would have to admit it does a little. However I still see people getting certified that I think are not ready yet. The reality is that this responsibility and decision lies with the person signing the certificate and the organization standing behind it. Personally I wish all instructor programs (even basic) not only required demonstration of weapon handling skills but also physical fitness test on upper body, lower body, core strength and cardiovascular system. Not to mention hand-to-hand fighting to include ground fighting tactics. But lets face it, the NRA and USCCA are not trying to make copies of people with my capabilities and skills sets. They are helping people get a start on the pathway to becoming a instructor. It is up to their Training Counselor to continue to work with them. As I said in another post talking about the same thing,

"It is important that new instructors receive continued support and development after certification so they can develop competency in both the classroom and on the range. I explain to my instructors that this certification only gains you the right to use and present this material to your students. But there is so much more work you must do in order to be what I consider a instructor. Furthermore, as said by Bruce Siddle, I explain that training people to survive in conflict is the only recognized profession that trains students to protect lives by the taking of another. It is also one of a few professions in which the instructor’s competence may be the difference between the life and death of the student or the general public. Subsequently, Instructors have a moral and legal obligation to constantly research methods to enhance training and, ultimately, to ensure the survival of their students. So I ask them a hard question, what kind of instructor do you want to be? Do you want to stand in front of a class and discuss defensive shooting and the skills required to do such only to take them to the range and have them do marksmanship shooting. Or do you want to have the ability to teach them the life saving defensive shooting skills both in the class and on range in order to save lives. One training psychology leaves the student without the necessary skills to survive while the other psychology proves that you have accepted your responsibility as a survival instructor and forces you to continue your development".

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to respond to your questions and share with you some of my thoughts.

Details and operations of the course will be given to students who enroll, but the shooting qualification, briefly stated, is accomplished at 3 distances over 4 courses of fire with an overall percentage mark to achieve.
For the vast majority of students, this is not a qualification that has been an obstacle to them becoming certified.
