I see Midwest Gun exchange has Mosin-Nagants for a $100. Since I am a Mosin-Nagant virgin what should I look out for when (if) I buy one of these? Should I assume that they will go bang without going boom in my face (assuming I degrease it first)?

Pick out a nice looking one....and to be safe make sure that the bolt matches the receiver. Look for stamped numbers...not etched. Then you should be good to go.
Yes, AIM has them cheaper, but you don't know what you will get and you need at least a C&R license.

I am waiting for my Mosin to come from AIM. I have nothing but good things about AIM. I went with the hex fof 89 but then again it is sight un-seen. It should be here by the weekend or on Monday I will let you know how it turns out.

2cool is right that you would need a c&r license to have it to ship to your door, otherwise it gets transferred to an ffl shop. Good luck with your choice.

Assuming you're looking for a shooter, then bore condition should be your first consideration. Most of the wartime built ones are rough looking on the outside, but all that is purely cosmetic. They still shoot and function just as well as prewar models. Matching numbers are nice, but not necessary, since 99.99% of the Mosins you see are refurbs and renumbered anyway. And as Don said, the 7.62x54r round headspaces on the rim instead of the case shoulder, so even if your headspace is a little loose, it isn't a problem unless you plan to reload. Even then, a little adjustment to your dies will eliminate that. Oh, and you may want to make sure that you have plenty of room, as these things tend to multiply!

These are a common sale item at Midwest. I think last Christmas they were down to $79.99 (or maybe $69? Can't remember for sure). I look them over every time I go in there; most of the ones I pick up have matching serials (stamped).

I'd say pick the best bore you can find (and furniture you can live with). Have them get you a light to examine the bore and maybe run a patch or two through it (or take a .30 boresnake with you). Good luck!

Yes, check the bore. Most are in great shape, but try to get a rifle that you like that has nice crisp/sharp lands with no pitting. Some people shy away from a counterbored rifle, but that was the Soviet's way of getting more use out of an abused, worn muzzle rifle. So if you do come across one that you like that just happens to be counterbored, it's your call as to purchase or not.

    Cheers.

I pulled the trigger this today. Bought one at Midwest. I had a salesman who started working there today. Nice young man. The only problem I had was I screwed the paper work up. :ugh:

Took the afternoon to clean the cosmoline off of it and fired it just a few minutes ago. It isnt as loud as my Savage 308 not does it kick as bad. I like it!! Ill post pics later after I clean it.

I picked one up at Christmas for $79.99 I think. I am waiting for good weather so I can take it outside and clean it real good. I can't wait to shoot it. I plan on buying another sometime and doing some mods to it just for fun.

Hey Guy. I work at Midwest in Mishawaka. The rifles we get in from Century Arms will shoot safely just fine. We have a crate of them on the sales floor and you can look through and pick the one in the cache there which you like best. The sale is for the round receiver Mosins. The hex shaped breach variants are a little more ($115). Only difference is the hex breach is a little be heftier (in the breach) and are a bit more rare to find. The weapons are surplus and have some finish and stock blemishes, but function fine.

I picked one of these up the other day too. For the price I figured why not. I havent shot it yet but I will soon I hope. I was wondering though, how many variations of them do they make. I have a 91/30 I think and I would like to pick up more. For the price why not.
