I'm in the market for a cheap but reliable .22 to target shoot with. I want something that will be reliable, preferably under $200, and non bolt. Any suggestions? Marlin, Remington...?

ruger 10/22 period. they are ubiquitous and the sky is the limit as far as what they can be made into if you want to do that later down the road. IIRC they are right at or around $200.

Suggestion number one by far is the Ruger 10/22

number 2 would be to find a Used Marlin Model 60 for around 100-125 bucks

There are a lot of good cheap .22s available. I keep a few "loaner" rifles available. The rifles I use as loners include a Mossberg Plinkster, Remington 597 and a Ruger 10 22. There have been no complaints about any of them but most folks like the Mossberg best. I think this is due mostly due to the light weight. I purchased all the rifles used and only paid $100 each for the Mossberg and Remington and $125 for Ruger.

Both my MARLIN 60 & REMINGTON 597 are ACCURATE, but the MARLIN 60 doesn't jam like the REMMY 597:yesway:

A lot of people will say 10/22. Owned one, and was not that impressed. It was very fenicky when it came to ammo. On the other hand. My $135 Remington 597 will cycle any type of ammo. It has a better trigger, and is more accurate out of the box. Another good choice would be a Marlin model 60, if you do not mind a tube fed rifle.

Definitely don't overlook the Mossberg Plinkster 702. It is lightweight, accurate and $149 brand new. I bought one for my son and couldn't be happier. It's a great little gun. I don't think he will have any problems getting his first squirrel with it this year.

Thanks for all of the opinions. I like the rotary mag of the ruger but not opposed to the tube fed. I've narrowed it to either the Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22 or Rem 597. If I were to upgrade parts in the future, which gun would best to do so?
