Spam Turns Serious and Hormel Turns Out More - NYTimes.com

It amazes me at the laziness and stupidity of reporters these days. They say the reason is that people are seeking out cheap alternatives. No offense do a little research. This product is $3.00 a pound that is not cheap. A whole chicken is always $.99 a pound whole here even if you waste 1/2 (high side) of it in bones it is only $2. I always see whole cooked hams for $.99-$1.29 a pound. People are waking up and Spam stores well long term. People are buying for SHTF scenarios.

I am also a big fan of spam. Slice some up and fry up a couple eggs and make a couple of sandwiches. Add a little cheese and mayo for a really good start to the day.

Yeah, we must be weird. I like the taste of SPAM also. Only eat it 3 or 4 times a year, but fried up on a sandwich with some yellow mustard it's pretty good.

Do NOT, repeat, DO NOT buy the lite, or low fat, whatever the hell they call it, it sucks! I love Spam, and bought a can of that lite stuff once just to see how it was, it was the worst crap ever. I Had one bite, and threw the rest away.

Don't throw it away, I'll take it! The only difference I noticed with the lite Spam was the lack of gelatinous fluid.

I've also tried Turkey Spam... not bad.

I noticed in the article it said something about 'Hot N Spicy' Spam... might head to the grocery store after work...

you are all a bunch of showoffs what with your fancy mustards and over the top preperation with pans that heat and what not. Back in the day it was me, my can of spam and a soup spoon...makes two meals!

The farts that followed were epic

I visited Hawaii recently and found a treat that's very popular there. it's available at every gas station/quick mart 25/7. They call it Spam Musubi. There are lots of variations but basically it's made with a slice of spam in the middle, a layer of sticky rice on each side and a seaweed paper wrap. Tasty!

I like Spam, it's just WAY too salty. Unfortunately, without the salt (the "low sodium" version), it's inedible. :puke:

While I think SHTF is a credible reason for the increase in sales, I don't think there are as many preppers as you think there are. I'm more inclined to think that low-cost staples such as rice and beans are being purchased by people being hit hard by the economy, and they're buying Spam because they think it's cheap (even though it isn't). I think it's just people trying to save few bucks.

And yet, your name is "timeforchili"...?

I think this is likely correct. People have become so conditioned to having to have food that's already prepared that they don't take the time to puzzle out the costs of buying raw materials and making their meals themselves... and I have to admit, I'm guilty of this, though not with spam, specifically. I can tolerate it, but I'm not terribly fond of it. If I'm looking for something canned to put away as a prep for longish-term storage, tuna seems to work well for me. Salmon also, though that's more expensive. Additionally, I've recently seen canned beef, pork, chicken, (and maybe turkey, but I'm not sure... I need to check those out in a cost comparison, too, but I'm suspecting they're going to be higher-priced.

If I remember to do it, I'll post costs when I get them.

    Blessings,
    Bill

Salmon is not as expensive. I recently bought a "little" on sale it was 3 for $5 in the 14 ounce cans and it was first run with expiration dates out 4 years. I like to buy preprared also bought I am anal and try to prep with a little knowledge and economics. I figure everything by the pound. We are learning to can and even though I hate ham we are getting a pressure cooker and learning to can meat. I need to see how much weight in ham can fit in a 2 and 4 quart jars. I am sure even with the jars (on sale) I can put up ham cheaper than spam. And bonus the jars are reusable.

WOW... I havn't had Spam since I was a young person (64 now). I'm thinking I might just have to try it again. My son went to college with a guy they called Spam. Not sure if it was because of his diet or his shape LOL.
