So I'm sitting in the woods this morning in my blind at the edge of a clearing on the farm in Burnettesville. The corn is still in and the woods is small with a very small clearing the deer love. At about 7:45 I hear what sounds like a heard of deer running at me through the corn. I can see the big buck bounding higher then the corn and I'm ready. He is coming right at my location! At full speed! I have my bow ready, but at the last second he turns and goes through the thick part of the woods! Damn, no shot. Nice 10 pointer. Less then 30 feet away, but too much brush for a bow.
About 3-5 seconds behind him is more racing through the corn. I figure the crazy hunters on the farm behind us are spooking the deer as usual.
I'm still up and ready. Then at full speed this male coyote is heading right at me! Less then 20 feet away and closing fast!
POINT! SHOOT! HOLY CRAP BATMAN! I HIT IT! I figured I would miss at that speed and scare the crap out of it! TAG! Right in the front shoulder. It stopped dead in its tracks and fell over. Kicking, spinning in the death match of its life, literally! I don't get out of the blind to go get it right away. Then deer start coming around, but stay in the woods and not to where I can get a shot. After 3+ hours, I get out to water the corn and go over to check my kill. It's still alive and turns at me! Screw that. I go back to my truck and get my pistol. One in the ear and he stopped kicking.
He was very heavy and healthy. With my bad shoulders, I had trouble picking it up and moving it. I guess around 40+ pounds.

I was at the farm with a friend (he was the one bowhunting, I was picking his brain and packing the Mauser in case we came across any yotes.

As he was walking through a pathway down into a retired field, he stopped and in a few seconds, 2 does came running out.. :rockwoot: .. first one turned up the slight hill toward him and stopped about 30-45 feet away and then turned and bolted the direction she was running instead of turning. Second doe didn't even turn up the hill.

My buddy then turned back to the field to see 2 big yotes :eek: who had been stalking the does, or, possibly, a fawn. One yote was about 30 yards, but since we were just walking,he didn't have an arrow knocked :xmad: and by the time I got down there, they'd hightailed it.

He kicked himself for a good while over that one. If I'd been closer, I might have had a shot to rid the farm of some vermin. :xmad: :ar15:

Nice job thinning the yote hurd.....damn coyotes! Shoot em all!

All year, 24/7. any weapon except suppressed.

Really? I didn't know that. I wonder why the state hunting and trapping guide says that coyote hunting and trapping season begins on October 15, 2011 and ends March 15, 2011? Unless, of course, you are on your own property.

Because of multiple shoulder surgeries and not being able to lift my arms above my head, I have the little yellow med card approved by the DNR to use the crossbow during any hunting season. It was a few hoops and papers to sign, but when I sent it off with the forms from my doctor, I had the card in about 7 days from DNR. Carry it with me always.

TIMEFORCHILI - He had not moved after the initial flip & flop. He was close so I could still see him in the corn field. No kicking or moving. He raised his head and snarled at me when I walked up to him.

I had a very similar thing happen whil and me and a friend were turkey hunting a few springs ago on his land.
in was around 10:30 am and we had went to a ridge top and set up blind and started calling , we were setting against a very large tree and my buddy was to my left at the 9 oclock position . i would call a little and stop , just then he said "theres a coyote , hit that call again " i could see the coyote out the corner of my left eye.
My buddy had his gun laying to his left on the ground and mine was on my lap
I hit the call again and the coyote started sneaking for about 10 yards more then busted into a full sprint , at that moment my buddy said "shoot that dam thing" and he leaned left as i swung my gunin front of his position and squeezed the trigger killing the yote grave yard dead and no mkore that 1 yard from our lap
had i waited any longer and I would guess my buddy would have found out if the coyote would have bit him or not

Congratulations. I usually arrow at least one coyote a year. This morning was the first time I've seen one while bowhunting this year. It slipped in behind me at 20 yards around 10:00 AM, and I just happened to see it when I glanced back over my shoulder. It was coming up a mowed path in the woods and I never heard it. I turned on my video camera and got it pointed so I could arrow it on camera, but missed my only good shooting lane.
