Earlier this evening, a few buddies and myself decided to coyote hunt, due to a massive issue with the amounts of them around his property. He showed us trail camera pictures from early in the year and happened to snag this photo of this animal. The picture is extrememly dark but i have added a red line where the top of his back is, and if you look behind the tree, under the block on the tree there is a white spot, which i believe is the backside of his tail. Now, the real question is.... is this a wolf or an extrememly large bodied coyote?Any info helps! thanks!

From this picture it looks to me like your red line it not where the top of the back is at all, you need to drop the red line a bit.

it looks like a large adult coyote or dog

That is a yote for sure.I see several here in SW MI.The ones on my property are huge,I have a large German Shepard and they aren't much smaller than him other than weighing alot less. The tracks they leave are as large as his too.We had a rabbit population explosion here in the past couple years and they started showing up.

The red line isn't on the coyote's back and the white spot isn't its tail.

    IMHO, definitely a wolf.

Have your friend return to that exact spot. Look for his trail. If you find tracks exactly like these, you have a wolf in the area.....

On a coyote's tracks, the 'nail' print will almost always be seperated from the pad print, by a small 'blank' space. That is due to them being so much lighter in weight, than a wolf.

    Mountain Lion :D

I've seen some big coyotes roaming through my farm. Some you'd swear were big enough to be wolves. I suppose the possibility is out there, so I guess other people besides us closet biologists would be better qualified.

Note-It is possible for a wolf to travel down this far, and up on my in-laws land in WI, they have seen wolves frequently.
