Gun ownership is an important right to exercise... many other countries do not allow its citizens to own guns. So why the question... I recently went to a gun store with a friend who has no guns and no experience with guns. To be honest before we went in i half-heartedly told him don't ask any supid questions........ you quessed it within 4 minutes he was standing in front of a 50 bmg all decked out... while looking down the barrel he asked the following "why would you want to own this" without hesitation the oldtimer behind a counter (half way across the store) perked up and said "because you can"... that was truly a profound answer....

...so why do we own guns?

Every American should know why we own and have the right to own guns. We do not have the second amendment to hunt, we do not have it for personal protection, and we do not have it for any sport. it has NOTHING to do with being an outdoorsman although that is one of its subsequent benefits. The Second Amendment is present to protect the First Amendment. You see, the founding fathers just had fought a war for 8 years prior to drafting the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The war was started when the King sent his troops to confiscate their firearms and powder. So you see, the First Amendment is who we are. The Second is what keeps us that way.

While there are many other reasons which stem from gun ownership as more practical and often enjoyable purposes.......

THIS is pretty much the basis for it all

Why do I own guns? Well see here. I owe some of the nicest guns I own to the democrats. Why take a look at this fine M1A, if all this talk of assault weapons bans had not inspired me, I may never have purchased it. Ain't she a beauty? Hey Prez, check out that nice 20-round mag!! Well, I own some things that are fun, and other things that are useful, and guns are both fun and useful, so...two for one deal right there.

And I'm guessing if he'd had the chance to shoot that .50, he wouldn't be wondering why you'd want to own it.

I don't hunt. I don;t like killing animals (I've done it before for 'sport' and it turned me off). If I have t do it for food, that's different.
I like the hand/eye coordination, and strive to put every round through the same hole. It's pretty simple for me really. I'm just anal that way.

If we would present this argument when the Second Amendment is challenged there is but one retort, the "that will never happen in the United States" argument. To this argument you answer "what, you mean the government would never confiscate our firearms like King George was attempting to do to the colonists? If he had succeeded would we have ever been the United States?" That will usually send people in a tailspin.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

Why do we own guns? It's our right, and until that right is taken away from me I plan to exercise it. I only know of 1 other country that has relatively the same right to bear arms as the United States and that's Switzerland. It's my understanding that every Swiss male with a family is given a government issued rifle and is trained by the government on how to use it. Also by having a well armed society...it keeps our enemies at bay. If you look into history you'll find that the first thing Hitler did to take over Germany was...disarm the population. Once he did that, it wasn't long after that he had free reign to do as he pleased without much of a threat from the population. I hope that is one lesson from history we (as citizens and as a country) will never forget about.

    That sounds like hate speech.

I don't see jr's comment as being hate oriented at all. Just the opposite. It's realistic. He is protecting himself from the haters. People who hate others for no other reason than the color of their skin, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, etc. truly are scary people deserving to be feared.
