I've been trying to find a 9mm to bump my lower powered LCP and P238. I really like both pistols, but some think a .380 is not enough. Not sure I agree, but looking anyway. I am leaning towards a CM9 or CW9 by Kahr, but I was just checking out the Sig P290. Hey, it's a Sig. It has to be good right? I'm checking to see If anybody here at INGO has one and what they think of it as far as recoil, accuracy and reliability.

I habve a P290 RS. If you buy a 290 thats what you want. The original had lots of issues and Sig replaced it within a year with the 290RS.

I can't say I love the P290....but I am pretty novice at it so my opinion is only marginal. My brother had a LC9 and he said the trigger on my sig was much smoother for a double action only. I shot them both and really struggled with the LC9. I am getting better with the 290, though.

I'm not sure where you're at...but if you are within a driving range of Atterbury I could let you shoot mine sometime to try it out. (you have to provide ammo though lol)

My complaint(and I"m a fat guy) is that the P290 is boxy...so it prints bad for carry...but I'm big and nothing hides well.

    I have a 290RS and I can say that I love it.

The trigger takes a while getting used to, but after that you can chew the center out of a silhouette target at 18 yards.

Only issue I've really had is it had problems locking the slide back on the last round. I took it apart, bent the retaining spring up a bit to relieve tension, and polished the back of the pin, works great now.

It's a tad heavy for a polymer gun, 1.5 pounds, but I like the weight and recoil is nothing IMO.

I kidney carry mine and it conceals nicely and hardly ever prints.

I have shot most of the rounds with the 6 round mag, I find it very comfortable and my pinky hangs completely off the frame. I also fairly hate polymer guns just because of the feel. For me, the 290 feels great because of the pattern on the frame, it's very secure.

I have shot just shy of 600 rounds through mine, and the only time I ever had a light strike or FTEs was when I used some 50 yeard old, berdan primed, corrosive, Interarms ammo. Any new factory ammo or handloads I've have 0 issues.

After the first initial cleaning before I shot it, I put 500 rounds through it without cleaning and had 0 issues, and I would have gone more without but I was worried about that corrosive crap.

Well there you go. Someone that sounds like they've got more experience than me that loves it.

I have had 2 FTF with it. Both with 'good' factory ammo. That said...on the second strike it fired fine and we went on. I also had a metal cased round stick in the chamber onece and it was a beeeeeoootch to get out. I shot about 50 rounds of the metal through it...the rest has been brass. I have about 250 rounds through mine and as M67 said....I am getting used to it.

I am getting much much better with the gun, though and can hit a target reliably now. I just started shooting regularly so I am definitely still learning.

Price isn't an issue. I'm looking for something small. I carry IWB on the right side of my belly. I usually carry the P238, LCP or my Taurus 605. So nothing bigger. I prefer single action, but am getting used to DA.

I had a Sig P290. I really liked the gun when I got it. Carried it for a while (IWB 4'oclock) and it always felt heavy. I put about 100 rounds through it and it shot and functioned fine.

But then I got a good trade opportunity and let the P290 go (for a Sub 2000) knowing I would soon pick up another sub compact 9 to carry.

Finally scored a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield about 2 weeks ago to be my EDC. Took it to the range this weekend and put 100 rounds through it. I like it so much more than I ever liked shooting my P290.

The Shield is lighter, but feels like it has less recoil. In hindsight, I'm glad I got rid of the P290 and very happy with the Shield I replaced it with.

    Just my $.02

I personally don't like the P290's. I think you're better off with a CM/PM9. I believe it is smaller (no doubt thinner) and I would bet the Kahrs have a better trigger.

If you'd like to go with a single-action, you could go with the P938. Let us know what you choose.

I know you asked about the P290 but since you said you were also considering the Kahr CM9 I figured I'd give my .02

I have two Kahrs, the CM9 and P380. I have about 1000 rounds through the CM9 and it is my EDC. Very light with a small foot print. Long but very smooth DAO style trigger. Due to the thin profile and smooth trigger I can't recommend the CM9 enough. Plus, you'll save a couple hundred $ with the difference in price points.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm way north of you, so will have to pass.:)

Everything you are saying about the Kahr is why I'm leaning that way, and because I like my P238 so much, I have definetly thought about the P938, but it seems to need some more bugs worked out. FTF, FTE reports.

Good point. I know a place I can go to test out the Kahr. I will do that before I buy a new CC weapon.

Thanks to all for the input.:ingo:

I had a 290, my first gun purchase. I just never warmed to it and traded it. I much prefered the Nano when I shot both side by side. If you like your 238 you should look at a 938

I much prefer my 938 to the 290

If the P290 is anything like the P250 subcompact I owned (and I believe it is), then you will probably not like the trigger. I've shot a lot and thought I could warm up to it, but I couldn't do it.

At any rate, I think you've picked out great guns and the best will end up being your personal preference...I don't think they will let you down. In all honesty, I'm a little jealous you're getting a firearm :D

Yea...well you would think with 8 revolvers and 7 autos I would have enough, but there is always just one more out there. And the more you read on INGO the more ideas you get. The CM9 is probably at the top of the list, and I still have to find a P238 rainbow for my wife. And now somebody has me thinking about the S&W Shield in 9mm.

I've shot the Shield before, and I wasn't impressed. I prefer my 290 a lot more.

The Shield doesn't fit my hand that great and it's not that smooth to shoot. It's thinner than the 290, but not by much, and it is a little lighter. I'm sure I just shattered a lot of INGOs thoughts on the Shield since I spoke bad of it.

Personally I can't stand the Shield, I never got on that bandwagon, same with the Ruger 1911 or RIA 1911s. They get a lot of love, and I'm not sure why.
