So I got myself in a bind and I'm looking to sell one of my handguns and FAST. I have it posted here:

    https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...-od-bi-tone-9mm-speer-gold-dot-ammo-more.html

but I know the private sale bit can take some time.....of which I don't have a lot. If I can't sell the thing at a good price within about 5 days max then I'll just keep it as I really LOVE the piece and the event I need cash for will have passed soon after that anyway. I'm guessing no local gunshops would be willing to give me anywhere close to what I need? Obviously if I sell to a shop I'll keep the ammo and lower my price accordingly. Any ideas? Or am I just SOL? I'm in Evansville but I'd be willing to drive a bit at this point.

A general rule of thumb would be to expect about 50% (MAYBE 60%) of the sticker price for your gun to sell it to the shop. They still have to turn it around and make a profit, but they can't sell it as new anymore no matter how little you've used it.

You'll usually take a hit when you sell a used gun to a gun shop.

So why not figure out a selling price that's better than what a gun shop will give you,
but maybe lower than you'd like to get here so you can move it faster?

    ^^^ now that's a reasonable approach ^^^

Go get your gun shop sale figures and then decide how low you can go with a reasonable private sale.
I bet an OBO here will get you more than the LGS and almost as fast.

Yup, I was thinking exactly that.

Go to a gun shop, see what they give you, then come on here and price it $25-50 higher. I would bet it would be a smoking price and sell quickly.

I've sold three guns on here, all of which sold within a week or two, and I don't think my prices were low (or high)...they must have been just right.

You are going to get nothing but a hosing from a gun shop if you sell to them. Trust me they are far worse than a used car salesman. You get low balled on yours and high balled on theirs. You are not going to get any where close to retail from a dealer or private buyer. But you will do far bettter from a private buyer.

From a shop perspective, 60% would be generous. It's just the difference in price between retail and wholesale. I wouldn't call it unfair, but it's still not a very good deal for you.

I've dealt with Gander Mountain before when I tried to sell a brand new gun to them that I had purchased as an investment in 1993. (Remington 20 ga. lightweight magnum, purchased for $419.00).
They offered me $325.00. which I declined.
You decide if they deal fairly.

I've sold one gun to a gun store in my life. It was many years ago and I was not long out of college, dirt poor, and I needed quick money to go on a deer hunting trip.

I got enough money to go on my trip, and I was happy until the next Sunday evening when I got back. That's when the regret set in and it's never left me. After all these years, I still feel stupid for practically giving that guy my shotgun. I still remember the smirk on his face when he knew I really needed the money and he knew he'd get a good gun really cheap. I even found it hard to go back into that shop and I eventually stopped, since every time I did, it pissed me off all over again.

Selling to a LGS is like selling to a Pawn Shop, 50% - 60 of gun's value. Look on Gunbroker and Gunsamerica to see what folks are asking and list it on here for 10% less OBO. you'll get a quick sale.

Remember that the universal rule of retail is to double your money, in some industries even that isn't enough to keep a store open. It's not tough to do the math, do it from the shop owners perspective and you may see why there are so few good local gunshops.

Too far for you, but I've been treated more than fairly at PSS on trades, but generally Bob is giving trade in/store credit on something you want, although I have worked a deal with him which was part trade and part cash coming back from him. Also factor in that you don't pay sales tax on the value covered by trade.

As others have stated you will get more in a private sale, but may take a bit to find the right person. On the other hand, as others have suggested, price accordingly and it will move quickly in the classifieds.
