I spent a decent amount of time in Juarez, Matamoros and Reynosa Mexico so most places in the US I just keep my head up and stay alert. At least here the cops are on your side.

I thought Chinatown in Chicago was pretty decent.:dunno: Close to the ballpark, pretty healthy LEO presence for the Southside.

Cutting across town, from the Dan Ryan to Midway after midnight is a lot more "sporty".:D

Chinatown is nothing. The, um, . . . extralegal security hired by the merchants seem to keep order and know who is there to spend money and who is there to cause trouble.

Sporty Chicago? Yeah, BTDT, 5 morons who had a few at a poker game and then decided to go to Lem's Ribs.

Mars Hill st , just north of Troy , west side of the street . House with a big bay window facing the street , Nazi flag with crossed swords on both sides of it .

At night the shades were always open and the lights were on , kinda like they planned it that way . Haven't been that way in awhile so it's probably gone now .

So the flag is displayed inside the house? I'll have to see if it is still there when I go back to work tomorrow night.

I know where he's talking about. I'm not sure if it's still there either.

Mars Hill isn't what it used to be. 20 - 25 years ago it was one of the roughest neighborhoods in Indy. All the hardcore Mars Hillians are pretty aged now and have mellowed. It's hard to be a badass when you're wearing Depends. :):

They used to stand out along Mars Hill St. and Foltz St. and shoot at each other. Luckily they were generally too drunk to hit anything. But they had potential. :D

Now it's just white trash punks and petty thieves.

Back in the day it always amused me to see the old guys walking around in their "Mars Hill Harley" t-shirts. No one in the Hill had two dimes to rub together and lots of the homes still had dirt floors, but some of them would piece together an old Harley. :):

    Priorities.

I'm taking a few classes from Ivy Tech this summer as prerequisites for Grad school. I attend the North Meridian campus off Illinois and Fall Creek. Now I know it's a rough area, but this window has been like this for almost a month now. It stares you in the face as soon as you reach the top of the stairs to the second floor. You would think they would fix that as soon as possible, but apparently they're not too concerned with hiding the fact that it's a rough area.

Brightwood is the worst area as far as violence goes. If you're getting a run there, usually someone has been shot or currently shooting. An officer who recently returned from afghanistan made a comment that he gets shot at more in indianapolis than he ever did over seas.

The swamp isn't as violent but you get more runs there. By the end of the week almost every house has dialed 911 at least once. True example of a swamp run: My sister (45yrs old) ate some of my french fries....
Another true story: An ice cream truck (see also mobile unlicensed pharmaceutical dispensary that happens to also have ice cream) was driving down NY street and flipped over flinging ice cream all over the place as well as the driver. The van landed on the guy in much the same way as stomping on a ketchup packet. The kids didn't care that the ice cream was covered in brains and hair and ran out to scoop up as much as possible. Officers tried to keep the kids back but they would dart in and grab like 6 or 7 pushups or something then dart out. Soon fights were breaking out on the perimeter as kids were stealing other kids stolen brain covered ice cream. One kid tried to take the man's wallet but it was pinned under the van.

All of 38th street sucks until you get west of 465 True 38th street run from the meadows: It's christmas and a lady calls the police. When the police are walking up the sidewalk, all the windows open and people begin diving out of them and running off. The only people left in the section 8 apartment are an old man and an old woman. The woman explains to the police that she made enough brownies for everyone to have ONE. The old man took two and she wanted him arrested. She forgot that the rest of the family had warrants.

Every scooter inside of 465 is stolen and every car on fall creek south of 38th street is stolen as well.

Anything on the east side in the 465 and 70 area and 21st and Arlington from general area. The apartments across from the naval avionics building is bad.

I have been working those areas for two years not and just keep an eye out and have a don't mess with me look on my face.

Now when I went to Cleveland for a bit when it got dark outside I was out like a fat kid in dodgeball. I just about refuse to work Chicago for the same reason... Lots of co workers get robed up there... Down here its rare.

oh the old apartments on Arlington across from naval avionics are not a place for white boys to be after dark... Or so I was told by a resident.... Said pizza places don't deliver there during the day even unless they know you.

a good hint is if the a/c units are chained down.... Stronger hint is if they are now really far off the ground.

    Indy urban west.
    Quiet in da'hood.

I now live in 46222 between Kessler Blvd. and Tibbs Ave. and just North of 16th Street in the house I grew up in. Mostly new neighbors and the demographics and dynamics of the neighborhood have changed somewhat but their are still kids playing up and down the street just like we did sixty years ago we all still look out for each other and our homes and do not recall the last time I heard any shots nearby or even a report of a burglary or robbery on the block. :twocents:

There's indicators I look for when I determine if I'm in a bad area.
    Crazy colored run down houses.
    Trash all over yards
People walking around everywhere or just hanging out next to the road.
Chicken and BBQ joints every block
Beauty salons and barber shops every block
Buildings with weird symbols on them and dudes in bow ties soliciting money in the roadways.
Abandoned buildings and run down buildings
    Just to name afew.

Sad though it may be, throw in a few pawn shops, cell phone stores, dollar stores, and the like and you're dead on. I believe in terms of sociology it is called a "transitional" neighborhood.

Oh, and I see you're not a fan of the corner of Fall Creek and 38th. That's where I see the most bow tied clowns trying to solicit money.

My grandads house was located just east of the 16th and Tibbs corner about 3 houses east of the old Frieje's drug store. We played all through there when I was a much, much younger fella. They tore down the house to build the BP station. I was never scared in that area and still am not. I have some friends that live in the Rainbow ridges section. Do not get the idea it was never rough, we had our share of knuckle busters. I travel through there almost daily down the 16th st. corridor.
If you go down towards the river it gets a bit sketchy.
