This may or may not be a :tinfoil: thread. With the recent rash of home invasions I am wondering if people have taken to stashing guns around the house. It seems that at least some of these assaults happen in the morning when many people are preparing for work. I have recently considered how I would feel facing an intruder when I was completely unprepared and not really in a situation to respond as I would like to. How would you feel if you were faced with said bad guy when all you have to defend yourself is maybe a roll of tp or a can of shaving cream. Knowing that you have considerable firepower in other parts of the house would be little consolation. I don't usually carry a gun around with me all the time when I am at home. There are other times when I would not have one readily available. Such as showering, doing the dishes, etc. I have recently been thinking of getting a couple of lower cost handguns to stash in appropriate places around the house. I know you can pick up CZ 83 .380s for under $200. They may not be beauty queens but they are reliable. It would be truly ironic to invest as much as I have in customized guns and end up defending my life with a milsurp .380 but, hey, better than the toilet paper.
So is this paranoia or being prudent?

To paraphrase our friend Kirk; It's not the likelihood, it's the potential price you would have to pay.

    What say you :ingo:?

This is why I usually carry a light revolver around the house with me. If something bad happens, it is there on my hip if needed. My fear about "stashed" guns is forgetting where they are in a moment of stress. I DO however know of people who stash them in various places for the exact reasons you stated. It works for them!

In my opinion, it is not paranoia to worry about a home invasion while you are at home. If you make the effort have a weapon on you whenever you leave your house, why in the world would you assume that you are completely safe within the walls of your castle?

I live alone and was really only thinking about two places. I have my house gun beside me on the end table or the computer table when I am on here or watching the tube. But you can't predict when you will need one and I don't pick it up and carry it with me when using the restroom or when I am cooking, doing laundry, dishes, etc. I am a firm believer in having guns that are near duplicates as much as possible to what you train with. All of mine are in the same family tree, with nearly identical triggers and MOA. I feel comfortable with any of them.

I just carry around the house. I don't have to worry about the wrong person accessing it, I don't have to worry about getting to it, and its a gun I regularly practice with. My LCR is with me any time I'm not underwater.

If you want to be prepared, carry the gun you train with.

A great idea but also be flexible, I practice and compete more than most and I think I'm reasonably competent with anything I pick up.

In fact I have firearms that are not my particular favorite so that I can become familiar with what ever I pick up.

I live in a tri level house and I have revolvers on 2 levels an auto on one, and an extra surprise of a pump shotgun on one, But if someone breaks in I would rather talk to them than hurt them

This is pretty much what I do. It's become a part of my routine... Get up, get dressed, wallet in pocket, gun in holster. Gun goes with me into the bathroom when I shower, since that's where I also get dressed most of the time after the shower. I recently got a Star "universal" holster at the 1500, and it's become my favorite holster, especially around the house. The large size fits everything from my 1911s to my revolvers to my 9mm compact. Retention is good, although certainly not as good as a thumb break, but plenty good for most situations. If you keep a gun on you at all times then there is no issue. With that said, for my self, in addition to my carry gun for the day I have an extra handgun hidden downstairs and a shotgun hidden upstairs. I am never more than an arms reach away from a firearm.

I have, at times, kept other firearms scattered around the house, revolver under chair or couch, another in a kitchen drawer, shotgun behind a door. Now we have a grandson who has become mobile, so everything is going back to secured places other than the one I carry.

When I am in the house for the evening or not planning to go out I usually wear sweats or "comfy pants" i.e. pajama pants. I like to be comfortable. Wearing a gun belt around the house seems impractical and slipping a heavy gun into a pocket on those would also be impractical. As much as I try to make myself carry one from room to room, I don't always do it. Having had several run ins with Mr. Murphy in my life I have come to expect him to rear his ugly head when I least expect it. I guess I will have to go shopping.

I carry my CM9 at home, before I had that I carried a J-frame. Even in basketball shorts you can comfortably carry one of those. The only place I used to stash a gun was above the vanity in an apartment I was at in the bathroom. Typically I would just carry the Kahr into the bathroom with me. It's easier then hiding guns all over. I figure having 5-7 rounds should help me get to a more substantial gun should the threat remain. Only problem is the wife doesn't carry her gun around the house when I'm not there so...I may start stashing one one each level.

The owner of 500 Guns is alive today because he stashed a gun in the back of his store. He was disarmed and forced to the back of his store but the bad guys couldn't figure out how to deactivate the safeties on his pistol. He had a revolver (.357, I think) in a holster nailed to the wall behind a toilet and shot and killed one or both of the bad guys. I will post a link later from a real PC if someone doesn't beat me to it.

He remembered where he stashed under stress, thankfully.

Wow! That is one hell of an event! Thankfully he had that stashed, scary as hell, no doubt! I wondered if he went to carrying a back up concealed after that (I'm assuming he was OCing in the store when it says they disarmed him)...I know the owner of a now closed gun shop up in the Region who used a stashed .40 to put a hole or two in a thug who came in with a single shot 12 gauge. There were a few people carrying in the store, so if he didn't someone else would have...I believe he started carrying around the shop after that.

I carry at all times at home. If in the evening when wearing sweats, I will carry it in my hand when going from room to room. If I go to the pot, I set it on the vanity, right next to me. You cant predict where you would be if and when someone breaks in. If I`m wearing my jeans, I have it on my hip. I also know people who have guns stashed through out their home and garage. It does not make sense to be armed "part" of the time. If you are going to be armed, be armed ALL the time.
